In females, unusual behaviours, extreme interests, and sensory impairment may be more sophisticated, leading many parents to simply ignore this syndrome as a possible diagnosis. These Asperger's symptoms may include: SOCIAL SYMPTOMS • Can avoid interactions with others or can be extremely shy. • Uncomfortable during conversations and avoiding eye contact. • Could face difficulty in fitting with peers. • Usually have only one close friend. • Shows empathy but can be confused without non­ verbal signs BEHAVIOURAL SYMPTOMS t Can be anxious when there is a change in routine. t Less prone to act aggressively. t t t May have a strong like or dislike towards some sensory stimuli such as food, visual patterns or sounds. Intense focus on a particular subject. Less indulged in movements like hand flapping or spinning. Practices rituals that appear to have no function. • May have an exceptional vocabulary. • Could converse in predictable scripted ways. • Could face difficulty in understanding non-verbal signs such as body language or voice tone. • Could use odd inflexions. • Tend to mimic rather than provide natural responses. • Appears to face difficulty with unexpected verbal responses. PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS • Could have an odd posture. • Resists playing physical games. • Could have difficulty with gross motor coordination. • Could be easily lost, even in the familiar surround- 1 ngs.
