ZEROWASTE 28thJanuary2015 “AUK-widebanonfoodwastetolandfillisrequiredwhenit comestoourwaronwasteandourquesttore-useandrecycle.” Theseriousness ofthewaste debate shouldnotbe overlooked andIbelieveit’s imperativethatwe,as asector,donotseethis as astepbackwards butinstead acalltoarms.IntheUK,almost15million tonnesof foodwasteisgeneratedeachyearandaround40per centofthatisstill disposedofvialandfill. Asweknow,this hasdevastatingandavoidableenvironmentalconsequences.Intermsofsafeguardingourfuture,itcould bearguedthat politicaldecisions regardingsustainablewastemanagementhold justas much prominenceas financialandeconomic reform. Achievingzerofood wastetolandfill willrelyonthe supportofthose ingovernmentwiththepowertoinfluencelegislation and policy. Theambitioustargets setoutby Scotlandin itsZeroFoodWaste Plan has seta positivebenchmarkfortherestoftheUK and is aleadingexampleofjustwhatcan be achievedwiththe supportofbusinessleaders andpolicymakers.Infourmonths,Britainwillelectits next governmentand wehave aresponsibility,regardless ofourpoliticalviews,toensurethatinthistimeofausterityour industry’s case is high ontheagendaofallthepoliticalparties. 2
