  1. Significance of Maargazhi

The Month of Maargazhi • The month of Maargachi starts around the 15th/16th December and ends on 15th /16th of January. • It is the period heightened spiritual and cultural pursuits across the two states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu. More so, in the state of Tamilnadu. • The Spiritual fervour viruallygrisp the people of this state, complemented by perfect weather.

  3. Stories galore • It is believed that Lord Vishnu in the Krishna Avatar and in his rendition of Bhagavat Gita has proclaimed that the month of Maargazhi or Maargashira is nothing but his incarnation. • Co-incidentally, it is an auspitious month for the worshippers of Shiva, too.

Andal • Andal had set her mind on Krishna and accepted only Krishna as her husband.  • She learnt about the gopikas who performed this vrata at Gokula or Nandagrama.  • She imitated the whole thing. She considered herself a gopikaa girl. • Therefore, she used to take everyone along with her and visit the temple in the early hours of Margazhi for her vrata. She considered Sri Villiputtur (her birth place) itself as Nandagokula. • Thus was born the beautiful Tiruppavai in the month of Margazhi.

Thiruppavai • According to legend, Srivilliputhur Andal is one who started these early morning spiritual singing during Maargazhi. • Andal composed 30 songs known as the thiruppavai, praising the god Krishna ( An Avatar of Lord Vishnu) consisting 8 lines each. • The first day is kickstrarted with the song “MargazhiThingal” and the month ends with “vangakadalkadainsha” that is sung on boghi festival.

  6. Tiruvembavai • This is equivalent to thiruppavai but chanted by the devotees of Shiva and is the part of manikkavasagar’sThiruvasagam. • These songs are sung by unmarried girls during the festival on 10 days preceding the ThiruadhiraiNolumbu. • This is a penance observed by unmarried girls of those times to get good husbands.

  7. A Season of Stability • Brahma Muhurtam is good time particularly for those suffering from psychological imbalances because the sun’s energy is pulling downward, and they can stabilize themselves. • Traditionally, in this month, there are various practices to be in touch with water. • Generally, people don’t want to miss the brahma muhurtam (3:40am, a conducive time for spiritual sadhana). • One of the simplest things people do is go into temple ponds at 3:40am to take a dip.
