  1. Air Pollution: What’s the Solution?Using Real Time Data To Teach Air Pollution Donna Rogers, USEPA National Air Quality Conference February 2006 Air Pollution: What's the Solution?

  2. Project Goals • Guide student discovery of the causes and effects of outdoor air pollution • Engage students through the use of online real time data gathered by government air quality scientists Air Pollution: What's the Solution?

  3. Project Developers • Developed by the Stevens Institute of Technology, Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education • Funded by the U.S. EPA • Supervised by the nonprofit Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management and U.S. EPA Air Pollution: What's the Solution?

  4. Project Description • Designed for Grades 6 – 10 • Correlates with National Science Education Standards • Meets the Excellence in Environmental Education: Guidelines for Learning (K-12) Objectives Air Pollution: What's the Solution?

  5. Real Time Data Technology can be a catalyst to improve K-12 education: • Increases problem-solving and critical thinking abilities • Enables visualization of complex concepts • Promotes interactivity • Facilitates exploration of selected topics in greater depth • Provides opportunity for involvement in authentic tasks  Air Pollution: What's the Solution?

  6. Project Description • Use as a self-contained module or integrate lessons into existing curriculum. • Contains three main units: general air quality; ground level ozone and particulate matter. All units contain a set of core lessons and a set of enrichment lessons. • Units contain a mixture of computer-based, hands-on and student investigation lessons. Air Pollution: What's the Solution?

  7. Project Description • Lessons may be accessed on the Internet or downloaded • Uses colorful maps and animations to display air quality information throughout the U.S. • Is interactive, fun and engaging Air Pollution: What's the Solution?

  8. Skills and Knowledge Acquired Students will be able to: • Describe what air pollutants are, when and how outdoor air pollution is formed, and what health effects result from breathing polluted air. • Read the EPA’s AQI chart, record weather data, and determine the presence of air pollutants. • Create graphs to help visualize or recognize trends. Air Pollution: What's the Solution?

  9. Skills and Knowledge Acquired • Predict when and where ground level ozone may occur. • Use knowledge gained to create awareness about air pollution and the associated health effects Air Pollution: What's the Solution?

  10. Activities Opening Lessons Core What color is my air? What do you know? What are the effects of air pollution?Optional What are the major air pollutants? What are sources of air pollutants? Ozone Lessons Core Weather’s role Tracking ozone Will there be ozone tomorrow?Smog City Optional Transport People at risk PM Lessons Core Sources of PM Size, shape, health effects of particulates Visibility Temperature inversion Optional Particulate matter investigation Closing Lessons Core What can you do?Optional Create your own investigation What’s your AQI? Air Pollution: What's the Solution?

  11. Features of Each Activity • Step-by-step procedures • Student Worksheets • Learn More – for students • Teachers – background information • Embedded links to relevant Web sites Air Pollution: What's the Solution?
