1. BACHELOR OF ARTS IN EDUCATION DEGREE, PROFESSIONAL TEACHER EDUCATION (K-6) LICENSURE DELIVERED THROUGH GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES Offering accelerated degree programs to career-minded adults.

2. THE MISSION OF PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS The mission of professional education programs at Tusculum College is to prepare teachers who are committed to excellence in education and who are confident in their abilities to assume leadership as educators and citizens in the communities where they live and work. To this end, the program continues the College’s focus on civic and intellectual development of the students, while fostering the skills, knowledge, and habits of character (dispositions) vital to those involved in the education of the nation’s next generation of citizens.

3. THE MISSION OF PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS (CON’T.) Education courses are taught by faculty of Tusculum College who have academic and practical backgrounds in the public school system. In addition to being offered during the day on the main campus in Greeneville, the K-6 Teacher Education Licensure Program is now being offered to working adults through the Graduate and Professional Studies Program in Knoxville, Greeneville, Morristown, Tri-Cities, Sevierville, and Vonore on weekends.

BENEFITS OF TEACHER EDUCATION AT TUSCULUM COLLEGE, KNOXVILLE • ACCREDITATION: • The Tennessee State Department of Education • The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools • ACCELERATED FORMAT: • The Professional Licensure Sequence includes 67 semester hours and may be completed in 18 months (length varies depending upon student teaching starting dates). • Major and general hours are offered through Gateway and Special Offerings in an accelerated format with a learning team component. • Students may enroll in 2 courses concurrently in Gateway. During the Professional Licensure Sequence students may enroll in one Gateway course per semester. • Selected general and major hours may be earned through testing.

9. DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION • Cohort groups move intact through the curriculum one course at a time. • New cohorts start year round. • Classes meet 3 of 4 weekends per course. • 54 Contact hours per course • 12 Hours per week in class • 4 Hours on Friday evening (or one weekday) • 8 Hours on Saturday (or one weekday) • 18Practicum hours per course

STEPS FROM ENTRY TO COMPLETION • APPLY AND BE ADMITTED TO TUSCULUM COLLEGE. • COMPLETE GENERAL EDUCATION AND MAJOR CORE REQUIREMENTS • ENROLL IN PROFESSIONAL LICENSURE SEQUENCE. • APPLY AND BE ACCEPTED INTO PROFESSIONAL TEACHER EDUCATION. • APPLY AND BE APPROVED FOR STUDENT TEACHING. • COMPLETE ALL REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHER LICENSURE AND GRADUATION.

11. STEP 1: APPLY AND BE ADMITTED TO TUSCULUM COLLEGE.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW STUDENTS WITH LESS THAN 12 SEMESTER HOURS SATISFY 3 OF THE 5 CRITERIA: • Evidence of two years’ work experience • High school (and college, if applicable) grade-point average of 2.0 or higher • Rank in the upper one-half of high school graduating class • Composite score of 800 on the SAT or 18 on the ACT* • Recommendations from two persons qualified to judge the applicant’s potential for success in college work. *Students who submit an official SAT score of 1020 or ACT score of 22 are exempted from taking the PPST.

13. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR TRANSFER STUDENTSWITH MORE THAN 12 SEMESTER HOURS • Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher from a regionally accredited college or university • Recommendations from two persons qualified to judge the applicant’s potential for success in college work

14. ADMISSION PROCEDURES • Submit a completed application to the College. • Submit official transcripts (sealed) of all academic (high school and /or college) coursework or GED scores. • Submit official SAT or ACT scores, if applicable. • Submit recommendations. • Students for whom English is a second language must furnish a score of 550 or greater on the TOEFL examination within the last 5 years.

15. STEP 2: COMPLETE GENERAL EDUCATION AND MAJOR HOURS.

WAYS TO EARN GENERAL AND MAJOR HOURS OPTIONS: • Gateway program • Special offerings • Transfer hours from other regionally accredited colleges/universities • Test out of selected courses (CLEP/DANTES) • Experiential credit through Prior Learning Portfolio Note: Students who enroll in Gateway courses during and after completing the Professional Licensure Sequence will receive a 50% discount off the Gateway tuition.

17. DELIVERY AND COURSE LOAD IN GATEWAY • Classes meet one time per week with additional time for learning team activities. • One 4-hour course is completed in 6 weeks. • Students may enroll in 2 courses concurrently.

ALL COURSES, EXCEPT CISC 216 COMPUTER AS A CLASSROOM SUPPORT SYSTEM AND NSCI 421 PHYSICAL SCIENCE CONCEPTS, INCLUDE 36 CONTACT HOURS IN THE CLASSROOM AND 18 PRACTICUM HOURS.

ELIGIBILITY, CONSIDERATIONS, AND COST • Eligibility: • Eligible at the sophomore level (30 Hours) • Considerations: • Readiness to pass the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) • Preparation for junior and senior level work • 61 Hours earned increases eligibility for higher financial aid award. • Cost: • $275 per semester hour x 67 hours (2004-2005)

ADMISSION TO PROFESSIONAL TEACHER EDUCATION • Be a registered student at Tusculum College. • Pass the PPST or equivalent SAT (1020) or ACT (22). • Complete SPED 101 and EDUC 200. • Have a 2.5 GPA on a 4-point scale. • Demonstrate satisfactory progress on the competency timeline. • Demonstrate proficiency in oral and written communication.

ADMISSION TO PROFESSIONAL TEACHER EDUCATION (CON’T.) • Submit written recommendations from faculty members. • Have apparent good mental and physical health with evidence that any handicaps will not impair the candidate’s effectiveness as a teacher. • Receive approval from Teacher Education Screening Committee after all previous items have been completed.

28. ADMISSION PROCEDURES PROFESSIONAL TEACHER EDUCATION LICENSURE • Pass PPST or score 1020 on SAT or 22 on ACT. • Complete cold writing sample. • Complete application. • Submit (2) recommendations, including one from an education faculty member. (Processing and decision for admission into Professional Teacher Education Licensure K-6 are made during the first 3 courses.)

31. CONTINUE WITH SEQUENCE • HGLN 341 LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS IN K-6 During this course: • Complete application for Student Teaching • Submit one recommendation from an education faculty member. Note: This process must be completed by the end of HGLN 337. 

32. STEP 5: APPLY AND BE APPROVED FOR STUDENT TEACHING.

33. ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR STUDENT TEACHING • A. Completion of required coursework • B. A cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher in the major • C. A cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher in professional education courses • D. Approval of the faculty in the major • E. Approval of the Screening Committee. Note that items B-D must be completed prior to approval by the committee.

34. CONTINUE WITH SEQUENCE HGLN 337 ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION Take PRAXIS on Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment BEGIN STUDENT TEACHING: EDUC 452 STUDENT TEACHING SEMINAR EDUC 454 STUDENT TEACHING: K-3 EDUC 455 STUDENT TEACHING: 4-6 Note: EDUC 452, 454, and 455 are taken concurrently.

35. STEP 6: COMPLETE ALL REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHER LICENSURE.

36. PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION TEACHER LICENSURE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS • All PRAXIS tests must be passed. • All required courses and competencies must be met. • Students will receive an “I” for EDUC 452 if PRAXIS tests are not passed. • Students may graduate without teacher licensure with 128 hours. • Students must earn a “C+” or higher in student teaching before requesting licensure.

37. NOTES A. Courses in the Professional Licensure Sequence may not be offered in the same order for every cohort. B. Courses taken at other institutions may satisfy courses in the Professional Licensure Sequence; at least 32 hours must be taken in the sequence at Tusculum College. C. Students who have already completed a bachelor’s degree, either at Tusculum College or elsewhere, who wish to add teaching licensure to that degree must meet all applicable requirements regarding admission to the education program, required coursework, and admission to student teaching.
