  1. Commuting: A Study on Student Transportation to/from NJIT Jordan Henderson Edward Ng MGMT 216-002 Prof. Sylla Spring 2008

  2. OBJECTIVE • Identify student form of transportation • Find out student satisfaction • Cost / Distance • Problems / Delays • Feeling of Security • Difficulty of Commuting • Overall Satisfaction

  3. How did this begin? • An email was submitted to all students majoring in Management • Email linked students to our website to login and take a survey http://web.njit.edu/~jsh7/survey/njit-login.php. • Successful Login brings you to survey (Note: login is necessary for survey to register in database) http://web.njit.edu/~jsh7/survey/survey_questions.php • We received 28 people who went to the site • 22 completed successfully • 6 people didn’t follow login directions correctly

  4. PARTICIPANTS

  5. Train vs. Driving • Driving is faster • Train is easier; gives time to do study • Somehow, we need to travel… but HOW??? • Which is the cheapest, safest, and most efficient way to make it to NJIT?

  6. DRIVING PROBLEMS • Accidents on parkway • Construction • Cops pull you over • Car breaks down • Gas is extremely expensive • Takes away your time to study; driver needs to pay full attention

  7. TRANSIT PROBLEMS • Power Outages • Train Derailment • Follows a schedule • Missed Train / Cancelled Train • Crowded cars / busses • Need to change trains or busses • TRACK WORK CAUSE OF DELAYS (i.e. Rail tie replacement currently) • Need tickets (long lines) / Risk getting a $74 ticket if ticket is not stamped (Newark Light Rail)

  8. Student Form of Transportation • Almost 2/3 of student’s primary transportation is driving. • Only about 1/3 of students use mass transit. • 16 students drive • 5 students use public transportation • 1 person “walks” – perhaps they live on/near campus?

  9. TRAVELING TO CAMPUS Directions & Distances • About 4/10 of students travel from the North • Approx. 3/10 travel from the South • 2 people “Live On Campus” • Most students live within a 20 Mile radius of NJIT • Some students travel very far to come to campus.

  10. SYSTEMS USED & COST • Cost of traveling varies greatly. • Cost can be as little as $0 to $10 to as much as over $200 per month. • Almost half the students use NJ Transit as their main system of commuting. • The PATH comes in second. • One student uses NY Subway most frequently!

  11. LENGTH OF COMMUTE (in minutes) • Most students live relatively close to campus, with an average 10 to 30 minutes commute.

  12. PROBLEMS – Delays • Frequency of Delays is almost Normally Distributed. • Students “Sometimes” have delays, not often and not rarely.

  13. TRAVELING TIME & RELIABILITY • About half of the students are very satisfied. • Only one student is very dissatisfied. • Nice graph displaying most students are satisfied with the reliability of their transportation.

  14. WAIT TIME

  15. FEELING Of SECURITY • On the whole, most students are satisfied with security. • A few students are very dissatisfied.

  16. Trains & Stations • Most students are satisfied with the locations of stations. • A perfect upward slope… most are very satisfied with the number of seats available (could be because most are drivers)

  17. PARKING • Most are satisfied with cost of parking. • Very dissatisfied comes in second. • Most students are satisfied with parking, but there is a large number of dissatisfied as well. • Only a few very satisfied.
