  3. Acronyms • ESL: English as a Second Language. Subject taught by ESL Teachers • ELL: English Language Learner • LEP: Limited English Proficient • WAPT/ACCESS: Language Proficiency Tests.

  4. How does a student become LEP? • Home Language Survey has a language other than English. • Student takes WAPT/ACCESS (Language Proficiency Test) to see if LEP. • If scores below 5-Bridging in any section of WAPT (Listening, Speaking, Reading,Writing) student will place in ESL program. • Team decision (parent, teachers, ESL teacher) will draw type of services (served or consultative)

  5. Type of Services • Served: Elementary, Middle, and High School LEP students participate in regular classes and have scheduled ESL instruction based on each students’ English proficiency levels. • Consultative: LEP students that are in the upper proficiency level in reading, writing, speaking, and listening may not receive direct instruction from an ESL teacher but may receive short term instructional support if needed. ESL teacher will monitor progress.

  6. LEP Classification • 1- Entering • 2 - Beginning • 3 - Developing • 4 - Expanding • 5 – Bridging NOT LEP • 6 - Reaching

  7. Accommodations • Classroom Accommodations • Testing Accommodations

Modify Instruction to increase comprehension • Use visuals, pictures, (multimedia: powerpoints, mimio, smartboard, videos, clips, transparencies, websites, books on tape and video) • Hands on activities • Teach concrete information • Use thinking maps • Demonstration • Provide copies of concrete material (teacher notes)

  9. More Classroom Modifications • Teacher observation/reflection during group work. • Stay away from Lecture or make it visual and memorable. • Peer tutoring/buddy/cooperative learning activities • Student subject area vocabulary notebook ( Geometry, Biology, Earth Science etc, with concrete visual representations, definition, morphemes, roots, synonyms, antonyms, sentence, adjectives. • Provide outlines/ study guides. • Write assignments on the board.

  10. What to teach LEP students… • NCSCS Modified grade level content. Modify your instruction to make your content comprehensible to all students.

Classroom Alternative Assessments • Verbal assessment • Cooperative learning (teacher observation) • Student demonstrations • Reading with partners • Role playing • Draw problems out • Projects with clear rubrics • Keep portfolio (stay away from multiple choice tests and Essays) • Take home tests with teacher notes/open book tests • Checklist • Interview • Provide word banks for tests

  12. ESL LAW • Federal law is very clear that no LEP child should be retained where language is the reason for the retention.

  13. Cultural Differences • Hispanics do not make eye contact when being disciplined as a sign of respect. • Hispanics kiss on cheek and hug when greeting. • Hispanic parents do not question teacher’s academic decisions regarding their children. Teachers are placed in a very high hierarchy in Hispanic culture. • Hispanics are touchy people and keep very close proximity to others. • Asians are not to be touched on the head for religious reasons. • Boys and girls are in separated schools in Pakistan. (Do not place brothers and sisters in the same class)
