  1. 7 easy-to-grow orchidsand their requirements

  2. 1) Phalaenopsis hybrids • No dormancy, the same regime all year round • Common room temperature or slightly warmer • Substrate – common potting mixture for orchids (bark-based mixture) or only bark • Regular watering once or twice a week • Filtered light

  3. 2) BifoliateCattleyas and their hybrids • Non-deep dormancy in winter (reduce watering) • Need bright light only with protection from the very hot sun • Regular watering once a week with complete drying of the substrate between watering • Substrate – medium or large bark for orchids without components with high water capacity • Prefer warm temperatures (80-90 F), but do well in common room temperature as well

  4. 3) Oncidium hybrids • Slight dormancy in winter (just reduce watering a little and don’t apply fertilizers) • Filtered or bright light with protection from the hot sun • Room temperature • Regular watering, don’t like complete drying of the substrate between watering • Substrate – mixture of bark and components with high water capacity, such as moss

  5. 4) Dendrobium phalaenopsis • No actual dormancy • Common room temperature or warmer (up to 85-90 degrees F) • Substrate – common potting mixture for orchids (bark-based mixture) or only bark • Regular watering once or twice a week • Filtered light

  6. 5) Cambria group (Beallara, Howeara, Miltassia, and other hybrids) • Slight dormancy after flowering (just reduce watering a little for 3-4 weeks and don’t apply fertilizers) • Filtered or bright light with protection from the hot sun • Room temperature • Regular watering, don’t like complete drying of the substrate between watering • Substrate – mixture of bark and moss

  7. 6) Paphiopedilum warm hybrids • Usually have non-deep dormancy in winter (reduce watering and place them in slightly cooler conditions) • Semi-shade or intermediate light conditions • Substrate – mixture of medium bark and moss (some Paphiopedilums like calcareous substrates) • Regular watering, don’t like to dry out between watering • Room temperature

  8. 7) Phaius • In winter reduce watering and don’t apply fertilizers • Prefers hot or warm temperatures • Substrate – potting mixture for terrestrial orchids or common soil for house plants • Filtered light • Regular and ample watering

  9. Learn more • Phalaenopsis • Cattleya • Oncidium • Dendrobium • Cambria orchids • Paphiopedilum • Phaius
