  2. serial killer… person who murders 3 or more people over a period of more than 30 days, with a "cooling off" period between each murder - whose motivation for killing is largely based on psychological gratification.

  3. Often, a sexual element is involved with the killings. The murders may have been attempted or completed in a similar fashion and the victims may have had something in common, for example occupation, race, appearance, gender, or age group.

  4. Edward Theodore "Ed" Gein murderer and grave robber. His crimes created notoriety after authorities discovered Gein had exhumed corpses from local graveyards and fashioned trophies and keepsakes from their bones and skin.

If Gein was guilty of murdering the 2 people he was convicted of killing he would not technically meet the definition of a serial killer though his case influenced the creation of several fictional serial killers, including Norman Bates from Psycho,JameGumbfrom The Silence of the Lambs, and LeatherfacefromThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre

  8. Jack the “Ripper” Name given to a serial killer in London England who was never found. He murdered women prostitutes whose throats were cut prior to abdominal mutilations. The Removal of internal organs from at least three of the victims led to proposals that the killer possessed anatomical or surgical knowledge. (Aug.- Nov. 1988)

Pickton preyed upon sex trade workers and is believed to have been responsible for the deaths of some 60 women.

Typology of Serial Killers: • Visionary - kill because of visions - generally psychotic • Mission orientated- rid society of certain types of people eg. prostitutes, runaway kids, racial group etc • Hedonistic - "thrill seekers" & lust killers • Power/Control orientated- pleasure is not sexual but power - often killing when the victim abandons hope of survival and acquiesces

Boston Strangler - Albert Desalvo (Sept. 3, 1931 – Nov. 25, 1973) was a criminal in Boston, Mass., United States who confessed to being the "Boston Strangler", the murderer of 13 women in the Boston area. His confession has been disputed, and debate continues regarding which crimes DeSalvo actually committed.

  45. Albert and his 5 siblings were raised in a violent household. His father was an alcoholic wife beater. Albert saw his father break all of his mother’s fingers, and he smashed a pipe into Albert’s back. When Albert turned 8 his father abandoned his mother and she remarried. Albert grew into a sexually disturbed delinquent guilty of many petty crimes. He spent 8 years in the army, stationed in Germany, where he met his wife, Irmgard Beck. Irmgard and Albert had 2 children together. He was known as a good family man and a hard worker. Following an honorable discharge, Albert returned to America.

  46. Green River Killer - Gary Ridgway • In November of 2003 he pleaded guilty to 48 counts of aggravated murder, although he says he actually killed 90 women or more, almost all prostitutes. The murders occurred in the early 1980s. As part of a plea bargain, he was spared • the death penalty and • received a sentence of • life imprisonment • without the possibility • of parole.

  47. Arthur John Shawcross – The Genesee River Killer June 6, 1945– Nov. 10, 2008 killed most of his victims after being paroled early following a conviction for killing a child. His childhood was a blueprint for sociopathic behavior: the classic love/hate relationship with his mother and father, behavioral problems, bedwetting, arson, and several head injuries.
