  1. Georgia Department of Human ResourcesAssessment and Evaluation Study Report of Findings April 1, 2005 Project #DHR001

  2. Objectives • Assess and evaluate Georgians’ current knowledge, attitudes, opinions, and awareness of chronic disease and chronic disease prevention. • Establish a baseline for evaluating the effectiveness of the Healthy Georgia campaign by measuring the change in overall knowledge, attitudes, opinions, and awareness levels. • Gather information that will influence the strategic direction for campaign messaging and execution moving forward.

  3. Methodology & Target Audience • 1,000 telephone interviews were conducted throughout the state of Georgia from February 15 to 28, 2005. • Participants included Georgia residents age 18 to 64. • A statewide random sample of Georgia residents was used to conduct the study. Participants were called Monday through Friday from 5PM to 9PM, Saturday from 12PM to 8PM, and on Sunday from 3PM to 8PM. Telephone numbers were called six times before retiring. Participants were screened and qualified based on having the most recent birthday in the household. • Participants were offered the opportunity to complete the survey using either an English or Spanish version of the questionnaire. • 50 pre-test interviews were conducted and included in the results of the study. • The final data was weighted by the following factors: • Number of telephone numbers per household. • Number of adults per household. • State population distribution according to age, race, and sex.

  4. Key Findings & Opportunities

  5. Key Findings Perceptions Regarding Health • 78% of Georgians surveyed described their health as “good” or “very good.” Chronic Disease Awareness and Prevention - Screening • Cancer, Diabetes, and Heart Disease top the list of the most important diseases to get screened or checked for, while the importance of being screened for Osteoporosis, Obesity, Asthma, and Arthritis lacks awareness. Chronic Disease Awareness and Prevention – Preventative Measures • Eating healthy, being physically active, and not using tobacco are recognized as important to keeping healthy; having a positive attitude and seeing a doctor for an annual check up are not yet considered core measures of prevention. • There is little awareness that the core components for a healthy lifestyle are meaningful in the prevention of chronic diseases other than Cancer, Heart Disease, and Diabetes.

  6. Key Findings Healthy Georgia Campaign Awareness • As expected at the benchmark stage, Georgians are not familiar with the campaign, nor have they reported hearing much about any of the potential slogans. • Many Georgians indicated they hear something “all the time” about eating healthy, being physically active, and not using tobacco; yet, by comparison, few say the same about the need to see a doctor for an annual check up or the need to be positive. • Television was the primary source of health information listed by Georgians, followed by doctors/healthcare providers, magazines, and the Internet.

  7. Key Findings Differences by Segment – Presence of Healthcare vs. Absence of Healthcare • Georgians without healthcare tend to have lower association between unhealthy diet or physical inactivity and chronic disease. Differences by Segment – Ethnicity • Caucasian Georgians tend to be the most aware of chronic disease and preventative measures, with African-Americans a close second. • Hispanics seem to be significantly less aware of the importance of screening for chronic disease or how the four key components of a healthy lifestyle are necessary to prevent chronic disease.

  8. Opportunities Chronic Disease Awareness and Prevention • Educate Georgians on the importance of a positive attitude and seeing a doctor for annual check ups as key factors in chronic disease prevention. • Work to realign Georgians’ perceptions about what it means to eat healthy and be physically active. • Provide guidelines and clear direction regarding what needs to be done by Georgians to accomplish the four preventative measures. • Raise awareness about the five preventative measures and how they can help prevent chronic disease. • Deepen Georgians’ awareness and understanding of chronic disease, including the lesser-known diseases such as obesity, asthma, arthritis, and osteoporosis.

  9. Perception of Current Health
