  3. Chlorine Residual • Read and follow SOP & reference materials • Follow safety plan • Collect representative aliquot • Protect integrity of sample • Record results and conditions • Complete Chain of Custody

  4. Each Participant shall be able to: • Turn photometer on • Zero instrument • Prepare sample • Read chlorine concentration • Make Manganese correction • Calculate corrected chlorine concentration

  6. Thermo Orion Photometer 1. Switch unit on using “power” switch

  7. Thermo Orion Photometer 2. Fill a 10 ml cell to the 10 ml line with sample Meniscus 10 ml Bottom of curved meniscus should be on the 10 ml line at eye level.

  8. Thermo Orion Photometer • Add contents of one DPD Total Chlorine Powder Pillow to the sample cell. Cap and gently shake for 20 seconds. • Wait 3 minutes. During this time period, proceed with steps 5 – 9.

  9. Thermo Orion Photometer • Fill a 10 ml sample cell to the 10 ml line with sample (blank). • Place the cap on the sample blank.

  12. Thermo Orion Photometer • 9. Remove the cell from the cell holder

  13. Thermo Orion Photometer • 10. Within 3 minutes after the 3-minute reaction time, place the prepared sample in the cell holder.

  14. Thermo Orion Photometer • Press “zero/test” • The meter will show the results in mg/L total chlorine

  15. Record Results • Record as R1 on QC Line • Cl2 R1

  16. Thermo Orion Photometer • Manganese Correction

  17. Manganese Correction • Fill a sample cell to the 10 ml line with sample. • Add 10 drops of Phosphate Buffer • Mix and wait one minute.

  18. Manganese Correction • Add one drop of Sodium Arsenite and mix • Read the Manganese effect as in steps 3 – 11 • Subtract the results of this test from the original to obtain the corrected chlorine concentration

  19. Record Results • Record Manganese Correction as R2 on the QC line • Cl2 R1 – R2

  20. Record Results • Calculate Chlorine Residual by: • Cl2 R1 – R2 = Chlorine Residual mg/L
