  3. HUMAN GEOGRAPHY • Students completing Human Geography will be able to deepen their understanding of humankinds relationship with their surroundings.

SKILLS VS CONTENT • Geography is not about learning and memorizing content ! • More about analyzing content and making meaningful connections to the real world • Will develop a variety of skills such as: • Interpreting, evaluating and presenting data, • Thinking geographically • Asking powerful questions that lead to deeper understanding of content (geographic inquiry)

POPULATION & DEVELOPMENT • Population Issues: analyze national &global population issues and their implications for Canada • Immigration &Cultural Diversity: describe the diversity of Canada’s population, and assess some social, economic, political, and environmental implications of immigration and diversity for Canada • Demographic Patterns &Trends: analyse patterns of population settlement and various demographic characteristics of the Canadian population • Global Development: Analyse standards of living indicators. How does Canada compare to the rest of the world?

  7. CLIMATE CHANGE • Causes & Consequences: Analyze how the climate is changing our environment globally and locally • Alternative Energy Sources: How can we reduce our reliance on fossil fuels? • Climate Solutions: How can we adapt to a changing climate ?

LIVABLE COMMUNITIES • Impacts of Urban Growth: analyse impacts of urban growth in Canada • Characteristics of Land Use in Canada: analyse characteristics of land use in Surrey & Vancouver • Sustainability Development: analyse issues relating to the sustainability of human systems in Canada (food & transport systems) • Urban Planning: How can the Lower Mainland plan for future population growth ?

GEOGRAPHIC THINKING SKILLS GEOGRAPHICAL PERSPECTIVE • Is concerned with the human and physical features that characterize a place • Every place is unique and connected • Regions are the units by which place is defined • What are the similarities and differences between regions of Canada? INTERRELATIONSHIPS • Focuses on the ways in which human and environmental factors interact & influence each other • Explore various factors & causes of events • Assess the +/- impacts and significance of events • Should we develop the Alberta Tar Sands?

GEOGRAPHIC THINKING SKILLS PATTERNS & TRENDS • How does the variation and distribution of geographic features change over time? • How do places change and stay similar over time? • Where are the changes occurring? Why there? • Geographic Models describe and predict patterns and trends EVIDENCE & INTERPRETATION • Focuses on the evidence used to support ideas about geography and how adequate is the interpretation of that evidence • How do compare standards of living around the world? • Assess multiple types of info sources(GIS, Infographics)
