  1. Jesus, the Son of God A Chronological and Geographical Look at the Life of Christ

  2. Review: Galatians 4:4-5 • Jesus in prophecy • The birth of Jesus • Political structure existing at the time of Jesus’ birth • The humanity of Jesus • The deity of Jesus

  3. Preparing the way for Jesus • Isa. 40:3 fulfilled (Mk. 1:1-8; Jn. 1:19-28) • John preached a blistering message of repentance (cf. Lk. 3:7-9). • The scene is now set for the coming of Jesus (cf. Matt. 3:13-17; Lk. 3:21-22; Jn. 1:29-34).

  4. Why was Jesus baptized (Heb. 4:14-16; I Pet. 2:21-22)? • John the immerser must have felt the strain of the same question. He said, “I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?” (Matt. 3:14). • Jesus answers John saying, “suffer it now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matt. 3:15). • Jesus was baptized for obedience sake! “Though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered” (Hebrews 5:8). • Jesus was baptized because God said that all men were to be baptized!

  5. Further preparations of Jesus: • Immediately after the baptism of Jesus he was “led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil” (Matt. 4:1). • Mark 1:12 states that the “Spirit driveth him forth into the wilderness.” • Jesus complied with the Spirit’s driving and was tempted forty days of the devil. • Jesus understood that in order for Him to be the savior of tempted mankind, it was necessary that he himself should be tempted (Heb. 4:15).

  6. “In all points as we” (Heb. 4:15) • The temptation of Jesus in the wilderness was many sided (cf. Matt. 4:1-11). • As the devil tempted Eve (Gen. 3:1-6), he tempted Jesus and so he tempts us (I Jn. 2:16). • Why was Jesus led into the wilderness to be tempted? Answer: “Wherefore it behooved him in all things to be made like unto his brethren, that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propituation for the sins of the people” (Hebrews 2:17).

  7. Temptation continues! • Lk. 4:13, “and when the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from Him for a season.” • If the devil did not give up on Jesus what about you and me?

  8. Jesus’ temptation continued throughout his life! • After feeding the 5,000 in John 6:15 the multitude tried to take Jesus by force and make Him King. • Peter said of Jesus’ death, “Be it far from thee, Lord this shall never be unto thee.” Jesus recognized the plot of the devil and so rebuked him saying, “get thee behind me Satan” (Matt. 16:23). • Toward the end of Jesus’ life, before going to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray, Jesus told his disciples, “ye are they that have continued with me in my temptations” (Lk. 22:28). • The devil never left Jesus alone and this was a crucial matter for the savior of the world!

  9. The time of Jesus ministry arrives: • Born of a virgin in Bethlehem (Isa. 7:14; Micah 5:2) • Came from Nazareth (Isa. 11:1) • John the immerse(r) prepared the way for Him (Isa. 40:3) • Baptized by John (Matt. 3:16) • Tempted in the wilderness by Satan (Matt. 4:1ff) • Ready to go about preaching the “gospel of the kingdom” (Matt. 4:23; 9:35; 24:14; Mk. 1:14; etc.)
