  1. Umbilical Cord Blood Banking in India

  2. The concept of Umbilical Cord blood (UCB) stem cells is emerging as a non-invasive, efficacious alternative source of hematopoietic stem cells to treat a variety of blood and bone marrow diseases, blood cancers, metabolic disorders and immune deficiencies. Based on a study conducted it was determined the level of awareness about umbilical cord blood banking in India among pregnant women is only 26.5% • As the newborn baby is delivered, and the umbilical cord is cut, blood can be collected from the segment of cord still attached to the placenta. Stem cells retrieved from the blood in the remaining segment of the umbilical cord and placenta are known as ‘umbilical cord blood stem cells’. • This blood which has been treated as a medical waste for centuries is a rich source of stem cells. Umbilical cord blood stem cells are unique and have many promising uses for the future. As these stem cells are young, fresh, unexposed to the external environment, upon transplantation, they produce an attenuated donor-derived immune response and thus have a lower incidence of graft-versus-host reaction when compared to other sources of stem cells (bone marrow or peripheral cells). • The collection procedure is easy and has no risk to the mother or baby. Unlike embryonic stem cells, umbilical cord blood stem cells are not ethically controversial and the treatments have required regulatory approvals. • Umbilical cord blood banks in India are of two types 1) Private Umbilical cord blood banks–wherein the umbilical cord blood of a newborn is stored at a certain cost and is available for the baby and family any time a need arises; 2) Public Umbilical cord blood banks –these are similar to blood-banks. Here any pregnant woman can enroll to donate umbilical cord blood at the time of child birth, and anyone undergoing a stem cell transplant can purchase an HLA matched sample at a certain cost. • List of Private Umbilical Cord Blood Banks in India* (Information taken from websites of cord blood bank, PGCB and relevant keyword research)
