History buffs and intrepid explorers will certainly have fun with their experience on board. Take for example the historic spitfire plane. Here are some quick facts that may spark your interest. 2. What’s in a Name? You can say the name says a lot of about a plane’s qualities. In this case, the term “spitfire” is derived from an English word meaning “strong” or “fiery.” And if you look at the plane, with its robust body and aggressive nose and wings, it’s easy to imagine how the name fits how it looks. Bulky at 2,400 kilograms, there’s no doubt that the Spitfire is ready for whatever heavy-duty action it may face. When it was used during the war, it was renowned for its impressive speed reaching up to 582 kph. This impressive plane could go all the way up to as much as 7,000 metres in as little as 9 minutes. It’s also been said that it can clock even faster when it nosedives. With its strength and power, it’s definitely no wonder why it seems like the kind of ride you’d want to have if you intend to rain fire down on your enemies. Strength in Numbers In the course of World War II, it is said that there were just about over 20,000 Spitfires built. That’s not a whole lot of number to begin with, which really goes to show just how rare this aircraft is. These planes remained in active service until 1955. Nowadays, these fighter planes are decommissioned, with most of them now merely being kept in flight museums. Others, meanwhile, are being used for flight tours. As it is, there is only about 50 of these fighter planes all over the world in record of still being capable of flight. If only for that, you should consider being able to fly in a spitfire to be both an honor and a privilege. Fortunately, there are easily accessible establishments that do allow tours on board the spitfire. Impressive Camouflage Perhaps, one of the most outstanding features of the Spitfire is its stealth ability. A popular trivia about this plane is that when it was used in the film Battle of Britain, the production had a rather difficult time filming the plane because it was almost invisible to the camera due to its camouflage. In order for them to be able to capture it on film, they had to resort to shooting the plane against clouds as backdrop, just so it would show up on camera. If you want to partake in a piece of flight history, then go on a flight tour in a Spitfire. Companies such as Boultbee Flight Academy have tours on offer that’s perfect for everyone. Page | 2
