  2. The Science Of Rockets The Science Of Rockets Section. .1 Part..1 Section. .1 Part..1 A rocket is a device that expels gas in one direction to move on the opposite direction. Rocket technology originated in China hundreds of years ago, and gradually spread to other parts of the world. Rockets were developed for military use as well as for fireworks. The first rocket was made in China in the 1100's. These rockets were very simple, they were arrows coated with a flammable powder that was lighted and shot with bows.

  3. Section.1 Part.2 Section.1 Part.2 The main advantage of a rocket is that the The main advantage of a rocket is that the total weight of the rocket is greatly reduced total weight of the rocket is greatly reduced as the rocket rises. The greater the thrust, as the rocket rises. The greater the thrust, the greater the velocity of the rocket. The the greater the velocity of the rocket. The force of gas propelled out of the back of the force of gas propelled out of the back of the rocket , this produces an opposing force that rocket , this produces an opposing force that propels the rocket forward. propels the rocket forward.

  4. The Space Program Section.2 part.1 The Space Program Section.2 part.1 The space race began in 1957 when the soviets launched the satellite Sputnik into orbit. The United States responded by speeding up its own space program. A satellite is an object that revolves around another object in space.

  5. Section.2 Part.2 Section.2 Part.2 The first living creature sent into space was a dog names Laika. She orbited earth aboard the soviet spacecraft Sputnik 11, in November 1957. In 1961 the space race heated up even more when Soviets launched the first human into space.

  6. Section.3 Part.1 Section.3 Part.1 BIG TEXT NASA has used space shuttles to perform many important tasks. These include taking satellites into orbit, repairing damaged satellites, and carrying astronauts and equipment to and from space stations.

  7. Section.2 Part.2 Section.2 Part.2 A space station is a large artificial satellite on which people can live and work for long periods of time. A space station provides a place where long-term observations and experiments can be carried out in space.

  8. Using space Science on Earth Section.4 Part.1 Using space Science on Earth Section.4 Part.1 Conditions in space that differ from those on Earth include near vacuum, extreme temperatures, and microgravity. Astronauts in orbit experience a feeling of weightlessness, or microgravity. And a vacuum is a place that is empty of all matter.

  9. Section.2 Part.2 Section.2 Part.2 The space program has developed thousands of products that affect many aspects of modern society, including consumer products, new materials, medical devices, and communications satellites. Satellites are used for communications and for collecting weather data, and other scientific data.
