  1. What is Firmware? Why is Firmware important?

  2. What is Firmware? All electronic hardware has software for functionality and operation. Firmware is the fundamental software that runs commands and instructs systems on how to carry out actions. It is either the only software on a machine or the primary one within an operating system. Your computer has firmware, so does your mobile phone, your router and TV, too. All of those pieces of hardware require firmware to operate the way intended.

  3. The Firmware in Your Computer

  4. Computers are marvelous machines. They help create movies, graphic arts, music, spreadsheets, word docs, PowerPoint presentations, software, and video games. But they wouldn’t be able to do this if they didn’t have an initial software program to recognize the necessary hardware and required software needed for the device to run as intended. It’s the firmware that does the checks and balances to ensure the hardware runs as intended.

  5. The firmware of a computer system is housed on a small chip in the motherboard. This chip runs immediately when the system is powered on. The firmware conducts a Power-On Self-Test (POST) ascertaining which devices are connected. If there is a problem detected, such as no human-readable display (monitor, TV, etc.) appropriately connected, the firmware will execute a series of beeps. The beeps will be a combination of steady and pulsating beeps. This indicates where the problem lies, all thanks to the firmware programming.

  6. In personal computers (PCs and Macs) after passing the POST, the bootstrap loader is initiated to load an operating system. Firmware isn’t only located in personal computers. The chip that houses the firmware is usually called flash ROM. Read Only Memory (ROM) it is a static memory that retains data after it loses power. Flash ROM memory can be rewritten using special tools. Flashing is a delicate process and should be done with extreme caution. If any problems arise during the flashing process it could break your system and render it inoperable. The same outcome can result from partial system updates.

  7. Types of Firmware There is firmware on all electronic devices. Firmware is programmed but it is considered a “Fixed” part of the operating systems totally separate from software. Software suites and apps are intended for the end user. Firmware is requires for the hardware (a device) to operate as intended.

  8. Firmware is found in various places depending upon the type of electronic device being examined. BIOS (Basic Input Output System) / UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) are found on computer systems and hard drives. Solid-state drives (SSDs) are used to portably store digital assets such as USB’s and they require a firmware. Routers, wireless access points, microwave ovens, ranges, washing machines, ATMs, and mostly all other electronical devices need the initial programming for operational “checks and balances”.

  9. Updating Firmware It is extremely important to have the latest version of firmware on any device. This helps keep your devices operable when it encounters newer technologies that the original programming did not include. Firmware updates tells the system how to interact with newer software. These updates provide the security updates, performance and efficiency to enhance the user experience.

  10. In some situation the only way to remove malware from devices that become in operable is to install a new system update to wipe out the bug. There are situation where malware has gone undetected and a firmware update was the only resolve to removing the malware that installed security apps were unable to detect.
