  2. It is always better to choose the right snorkelling gear for your comfort and safety. Find a local SSI dive center that carries high-quality equipment to build your personal snorkeling system. Your comfort in the aquatic environment is directly linked to our equipment. A mask is your window to the underwater world and is the most important piece of your snorkeling system. The mask is designed to provide clear vision underwater, and proper fit ensures a secure, comfortable, and watertight seal. A neoprene strap adds extra comfort. There are a few different snorkel styles, dry, semi-dry, and standard. Your SSI instructor will help you decide which is best for you. Like snorkels, fins come in a variety of styles some are full foot and some are open-heeled for use with boots, again find what works best for you. A buoyancy device or snorkel vest increases your safety. Snorkel vests are a great surface flotation device and one size fits all. Get ready with your snorkelling Gear The right fit for your mask is important, place it on your face breathe in through your nose, and let go with a tight seal. It should not fall off your face. Pull the strap over the crown of your head and adjust the straps for a comfortable fit but don’t over-tighten. Next, put the snorkel on the outside of the mask strap on the left. Finally adjust the snorkel so it fits comfortably in your mouth, On the left side of your face. Before each dive rub some commercial defog inside your mask and rinse it once so it stays clear when you’re in the water. Now prepare your fins by pulling the inserts out of the foot pockets and wetting them. Slide in flip up the foot pocket and you’ll see that it fits and that’s it. You’re nearly ready to go snorkeling. Sunny or cloudy waterproof sunscreen is always a good idea and don’t forget to reapply after out of the water. Exposure suits come in a variety of styles depending on the water temperature. You can choose from rash guards, thin dive skins, shorty, or full wetsuits. It’s all about personal preference. The thicker suit provides more buoyancy. You may have to use more weights for a comfortable swimming position but be careful not to overweight yourself. Let’s Do Snorkeling Snorkel is too special to experience alone more importantly, it is much safer to snorkel with a friend or family member. Always listen carefully to your SSI snorkeling instructor. If the boat or dock is too high to slide in, check that the water is deep enough to enter. Hold your mask so it doesn’t slide up and off when you take a big step into the water. If you’re entering deeper water from a low boat or dock just ease yourself and enter gently into the water. You need to be streamlined as you swim, keep your arms at your side, and kick from your hips without bending your knees too much. If the water splashes into your snorkel just blow it out by exhaling sharply. Here are some expert snorkeling tips If you feel your mask pressing against your face when you go down, blow some air through your nose to equalize it. This also helps to clear water from your mask. As you swim along, you may decide you want to take a closer look at something. Take a deep breath bend at the hips and then swim gently downward. As you go deeper you’ll feel pressure in your ears. This is normal to equalise the pressure pinch your nose and blow gently against it. You will feel the pressure equalized in your ears. Do this every few meters or feet before you feel discomfort. If you can’t equalize your ears do not descend further, it hurts and you can injure your ears. If you can’t equalize stop, go back up, catch your breath, and try again. With some practice, you will find you can easily equalize your ears. When you feel the urge to breathe swim up look up and extend your arm for safety as you ascend. Standard snorkels flood while you’re down so you need to clear it at the surface before taking a breath. Sometimes, you may not have enough air in your lungs to blow out the water, just take out the snorkel, take a breath, and then clear it with no problem. 3/3
