  1. American Literature I Finding 15th - 19th Century Authors Connie St. Clair-Andrews

  2. Simple vs. Advanced Searching • Allows you to search for broad information, or very specific information • You use the simple search to find an author or title • One search term/phrase at a time • Allows you to build a more detailed/accurate search • Several search terms/phrases at a time • More options for limiting your search

  3. Some Advanced Search Techniques • Use simple Boolean: “And,” “Not,” “Or” • Use truncation: Shift + 8 = * • Use the Thesaurus, Topics, etc. • ILL if the article is not available here

  4. Keyword vs. Subject Searching • Words you think of to use for searches, aka, natural language • Some databases provide a thesaurus to look up similar words or the official term; they are not always called a “thesaurus.” • Official words in a database or catalog, aka, controlled language • Try the subject terms found in one catalog in your other database searches too. Sometimes you can find more/different articles.

  5. Author vs. Subject Search • An author search is when you search only for those books written by the author. • Sometimes you get books the author is a co-author on, but usually if the book is an anthology it will not show up in the list. • A subject search is when you get books about the author, titles they penned, or the genre they wrote in. ―――――――――― • Genre is: fiction, non-fiction, westerns, autobiography, etc.
