Training Courses on Japanese ODA Programs organized by International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering (IISEE), BRI • Course on Seismology, Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Mitigation (Regular Course, since1962) -Lectures Seismology Earthquake Engineering Earthquake Disaster Prevention Strategies -Duration about one year • Global Seismological Observation Course (since 1995) -Lectures Seismological Observation Analysis of Seismic Data Techniques to Distinguish nuclear tests Outline of CTBT and International MS -Duration about two month • Individual Course -incentive studies on urgent topics of each countries • Total Number of Participants until Jan. 2005 1,227 from 92 countries 98 from Peru, the largest among all the countries

BRI/JICA Projects for Earthquake Disaster Mitigation in Developing Countries • Objective -to develop human resources and physical basis in each countries -to contribute to mitigate disasters through elaboration of seismic codes or other ways -to empower the CP organization to be a national/regional center of earthquake disasters mitigation activities • Scope of Activities -instrumentation of seismometers and strong motion SM -structural testing -dissemination of information through trainings, seminars, and others • Programs offered by Japanese Government -dispatch of Japanese experts -training of CP personnel in Japan -donation of facilities and equipments for monitoring, testing, R&D, dissemination and others

R&D Activities of IISEE(2)( International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering) • Strong Motion Monitoring by the Network of BRI -seventy seven stations throughout Japan -simultaneous monitoring at upper part, basement and ground of the buildings • Development of Damages Estimation System -Damage estimation immediately after earthquakes -Damage estimation for preparedness

Further Development in Recent Years and for futureBetterment/Expansion of IISEE Training Course • Contribution and cooperation of outside organizations -United Nations Center for Regional Development (UNCRD) -Universities • Conferment of Master’s Degree (under preparation) Graduates of IISEE regular course will be eligible for Mater’s degree of a unversity • Expansion of scope of studies -earthquake disaster prevention strategies (starting in 2004/2005 course) disaster mitigation policy hazard assessment risk assessment -tsunami disasters (under preparation)

Further Development in Recent Years and for futureIISEE Net (Information network on intern-net) • Aim -to support researchers and engineers in developing countries in their R&D activities • Contents of the web site following items of information of 80 countries are available seismic monitoring network historical report on seismic damages seismic codes micro- zonation data • Future development -uploading of reports on research and surveys on EQs -listing of related websites for information searching

Further Development in Recent Years and for futureR&D on a Comprehensive approach to conventional housing in DCs • Aim -to contribute to mitigate earthquake disasters through dissemination of appropriate technologies • We are focusing on: -feasible and affordable technologies for communities/people -strategies for dissemination of technologies -diffusion and sustainable growing of technologies in communities along with economical effects such as job opportunities
