  1. Shooters Can Benefit From Some Great Options To Protect Their Hearing Everybody has, at some point, experienced the effects of loud sound or sudden noise on the ears, whether momentarily only, or for longer – even ongoing – periods. Think of loud music at a party, the sudden ‘bang’ as a door slams shut and, much worse, gun and rifle fire in the immediate vicinity. Such loud sounds can affect individuals’ ears negatively: it can cause sudden sharp pain if the sound is very near, it can cause ongoing ringing in the ears, known as tinnitus, and in worst case scenarios the effects can be damaging such as leading to cases of limited – or more serious – hearing loss. These are all examples of what is referred to as NIHL (Noise-Induced Hearing Loss) which often can be prevented if the necessary precautions are taken. Excessive noise is a given at the shooting range, during competition shooting and every discipline that hunters enjoy whether it is big game hunting, whitetail hunting in Alabama or wing-shooting activities, for instance. In some cases, such as with gun fire or where explosions take place, ear drums can be ruptured or the bones in the middle ear can be damaged. These scenarios may lead to immediate deafness and be irreversible. For other sufferers the real danger of NIHL lies in the fact that it is a gradual process that develops over time; in other words, you are not really aware of it until such time that sound becomes distorted or muffled, or you may find it hard to follow conversation. This situation often worsens with age and greater exposure to loud sound, and sometimes forces individuals to start wearing hearing aids. Many individuals understand this and try their best to protect themselves from such situations by either moving away from excessive noise or avoiding such situations altogether; however, the hunter and other shooters do not have that option. So they heed good advice such as wearing protection over their ears such as ear muffs which have been around for a good number of years, or one of a number of foam ear plugs. Of course these offer some protection even if they are not always comfortable or eliminate loud sound altogether. Fortunately research is ongoing into what the best form of ear protection for shooters is, and newer methodologies and more advanced products enter the market all the time to offer shooters improved options. The most recent of these refer to digital protection for shooters’ ears. Devices are manufactured to offer advanced protection whereby harsh, dangerous sounds are eliminated but other, natural and pleasant sound still reaches your ears. This is of tremendous benefit for the shooter: you no longer have to worry

  2. about hearing loss as you fire away, and what’s more – you are able to hear normal sound in the bush giving you a tactical advantage over your prey; you can hear the instructor at the range as he explains and you and the others shoot as much as you need to; you are able to have normal conversations with those near you. These devices, obviously, have introduced a whole new dimension into what it means to block out harmful noise but still be able to listen to normal sound. These devices are more available than ever before, they are offered in different models, some with better protection than others, some more expensive and others cheaper. The good thing is to know that options exist and that shooters no longer have to worry about NIHL, not if they wear one of these devices. The best among these are made and sold by companies that offer them as customized ear plugs or devices, in other words they are manufactured for the ears of a specific person according to their ear shape and the contours of their ears. This means they fit your ears perfectly for maximum protection. These can be ordered from leading suppliers in the US and elsewhere – in fact, in many parts of the world where shooters now are very aware of the dangers of loud noise to their hearing. Some research on the internet quickly leads the shooter to the best of these companies, for peace of mind, and for protection of your ears.
