  1. The number of Christians is declining, both as a share of the U.S. population and in total number. • The percentage of Americans who identify with non-Christian faiths, such as Islam and Hinduism, has grown in recent years, from 4.7% in 2007 to 5.9% in 2014.

  2. Approximately 6,600 people groups in the world are considered unreached with the gospel. • For every dollar of Christian resources, less than one penny is directed at reaching unreached peoples with the gospel.

  3. More than 1,800 languages in the world today do not have a translation of the Bible. • How do these numbers make you feel? • What would you say is our responsibility when it comes to reaching the world with the gospel?

  4. While the church has made significant strides in evangelism since the first century, there is much yet to be done. Today we will see how the early church and believers began to take the gospel to all the world, and how we can do our part today.

  5. Sent Into the World Acts 13:1-52 family theme: Spreading the Gospel

  6. Objectives: Know: Under the direction of the Spirit, the church at Antioch sent Paul and Barnabas to take the gospel to the Gentiles. Think: Be conscious that it has always been God’s plan that the gospel be taken to all people.

  7. Objectives: Do: Share the gospel at every opportunity, realizing that some will listen, and others will not.

  8. The Church Sends People Out With the Gospel Acts 13:1-12

  9. The Church Sends People Out With the Gospel As the church met for a time of worship and fasting, they sensed the leadership of the Holy Spirit to “set apart” Barnabas and Saul to carry on the work God had for them. The church prayed and sent them out, according to the Holy Spirit’s leading.

  10. The sending of Paul and Barnabas by the church at Antioch illustrates that God established the church to make disciples and transfer the faith.

  11. The Church Trains, Sends, and Supports Those Who Share the Gospel. • In what ways is our church carrying out its role of training, sending, and supporting those carrying the gospel to an unbelieving world? • How can we be more effective at this?

  12. Believers Use the Scripture toSupport and Proclaim the Gospel Acts 13:13-41

  13. Paul’s sermon to those in the synagogue made it clear that God offers salvation and forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ.

  14. Believers Use the Scripture toSupport and Proclaim the Gospel Paul used a variety of Old Testament sources to show how the entire canon of Scripture points to the Messiah, and how Christ fulfilled those Scriptures. He preached the Word, not his opinion or philosophy.

  15. We study the Bible so we can accurately share the gospel. • Besides evangelism, what benefits are there to learning and memorizing Scripture?

  16. We study the Bible so we can accurately share the gospel. • How can we use Scripture and our knowledge of it for the purpose of evangelism?

  17. Some Want to Hear the Gospel,But Others Oppose It Acts 13:42-52

  18. Some Want to Hear the Gospel, But Others Oppose It Many of the Gentiles rejoiced, glorified the Lord, and experienced the promise of eternal life. Many of the Jews, however, responded in anger, inciting others to anger and persecuting Paul and Barnabas for their message.

  19. The varied reactions to Paul’s preaching of the gospel illustrate that we are engaged in a spiritual warfare.

  20. We seek to share the gospel at every opportunity, knowing some will listen, and others will not. • Does knowing that some will reject your message encourage you to share it more, or discourage you from sharing at all? Why?

  21. We seek to share the gospel at every opportunity, knowing some will listen, and others will not. • Why does the Lord not hold us accountable for the results of our evangelism?

  22. In what ways are we seeking to reach people in our community and city? • What are some other ways we could reach out to our community and city?

  23. In what ways are we involved in reaching people in other parts of the world? • How could we become more involved in reaching people in other parts of the world?
