Biogas refers to the mixture of various gases obtained from the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. It is produced by the anaerobic digestion with anaerobic organisms, which ferments the biodegradable material inside a closed system.  The gas obtained in this process is composed of methane (50%-60%), CO2 (25%-45%) and some admixtures. It is surprising to note that India can produce 17,000 MW of power using biogas which is about 10% of the total electricity installed capacity in the country.
