Assistive Technology • “Devices that extend the abilities of an individual in ways that provide physical and/or sensory access.” (Roblyer and Doering, 2013) • Device or tool that can aid in a person with a disability completing an everyday task. Examples: wheelchair, braces, captioning, braille, hearing aids, etc

  3. IDEA- Individuals with Disabilities Education Act • National law that ensures services to children with disabilities. • Schools are to provide special help and services to meet individual children’s needs. • Participation of parents is also key with the IDEA. Parents should be involved in the process of meeting the child’s individual educational needs.

  4. IEP- Individualized Educational Plan • Plan that can be put in place for students with disabilities or learning disabilities. • The team writing the IEP must consider assistive technology when creating the plan for an individual with a disability. According to the Center for Parent Information and Resources, “More than 6 million children with disabilities receive special education and related services.”

  5. Assistive Technology for Students with Hearing Impairments Devices that can provide amplified sound, create ways to access information through vision or through a vibration. • Hearing Aid- communication device that helps those hard of hearing

  6. Assistive Technology for Students with Hearing Impairments • Closed Captions- text version of what is being spoken on television, movies, or computer presentations

  7. Assistive Technology for Students with Hearing Impairments • Cell phones- allow the student to take pictures of information given, communicate through texting, and visual resources through apps

  8. Assistive Technology for Students with Visual Impairments • Braille Printer- receive data information from the computer and then prints the information into Braille text

  9. Assistive Technology for Students with Visual Impairments • Digital Talking Books- books played out loud for the student to hear instead of read • Digital Talking Book Player- allows the student to play the book he or she wants read aloud

  10. Assistive Technology for Students with Visual Impairments • Math Window Braille Geometry Kit- will allow the student to work through geometry problems and graph them Contains point markers for the student to accurately locate points to graph.

  11. Assistive Technology for Students with Learning Disabilities • Calculator- tool that allows the student to compute an answer, but still ensures that the student understands the concept

Assistive Technology for Students with Learning Disabilities • Graphic Organizers- helps the student to organize information or thoughts in a more understandable way Many graphic organizers can be found online Below is one website with helpful graphic organizers: http://edhelper.com/teachers/graphic_organizers.htm

  13. Assistive Technology for Students with Physical Disabilities • Wheelchairs- manually or power driven device used to allow the student with a disability to complete tasks by giving them mobility

  14. Assistive Technology for Students with Physical Disabilities • Crutches- device that is designed to help students with disabilities to have mobility and to help them maneuver in and out of places a little easier than a wheelchair
