  1. The Technology Department What Is Technology And What Do Technology Students Do? By Dr. Cliff Mirman Chair, Technology Department

  2. What is Technology - Technology involves the application of Science, Math, Computer, And Management skills to the solution of real world problems. Sounds like the definition of engineering ??? Technology an Engineering are very similar – except: Technology is based upon applications and hands-on skills, while there is less emphasis on theory

  3. Technology/ Engineering Relationship Technology/ Engineering Employment Functions

  4. What does one study in Technology? • Manufacturing Engineering Technology • Electrical Engineering Technology • Industrial Technology

  5. Before taking any advanced courses one must take the basics -- What are they?

  6. Curricular requirements and interesting courses • Manufacturing Engineering Technology • Basics: • COMS 100, ENGL 103, and ENGL 104 • Gen Ed Requirements (7 courses) • CHEM (110A or 210), CSCI240, Up to Math 230, PHY 250, STAT 208 • Courses in Manufacturing Engineering Tech: • Computer-Aided Design • Engineering Mechanics • Strength of Materials • Structure & Properties of Materials • Computer Integrated Manufacturing • Programmable Electronic Controllers • Fluid Power Technology • Metal Fabrication Processes • Tool and Die Design • Plastic Molding Processes • Numerical Control Systems • Ethics in Technology • Internship • Engineering Economy • Industrial Quality Control • 1 year multi-discipline Senior Projects course

  7. Electrical Engineering Technology Basics: • COMS 100, ENGL 103, and ENGL 104 • Gen Ed Requirements (7 courses) • CHEM (110A or 210), CSCI240, Up to Math 230, PHY 250, STAT 208 Courses in Electrical Engineering Tech: • Electricity & Electronics Fundamentals • Electrical Fundamentals & Circuit Analysis I & II • Electronics I & II • Digital Logic Design • Control Systems • Microprocessors & Interfacing • Communication System Design • Electric Machines & Transformers • Programmable Electronic Controllers • Micro controllers Interfacing & Applications • Fiber Optics Communication • Digital & Data Communication • Integrated Circuit Devices • Advanced Digital Design • Industrial Control Electronics • 1 year multi-discipline Senior Projects course

  8. Industrial Technology • Comprised of four parts • Gen Ed and Communications • Technology Fundamentals • Concentration Areas • Computer-Aided-Design • Manufacturing Technology • Plastics Technology • Occupational Safety • Special Technical (only for transfer) • Management and Supervision • Technology Electives

  9. What do EET, MET, and IT majors do during their undergraduate years? Internships and working with industry Most of the courses which our majors take include laboratory components. • Departmental Labs include: • Computer-Aided-Design • PLC • Automation • Machining • Controls • Electronics • Circuits • Plastics • CNC Machines • Metal Fabrication and Welding

  10. So – What do Engineering and Industrial Technology students do after graduation? Development of Large scale systems – working with individuals in other fields Tires placed on the rim and inflated – GM assembly plant MET’s and EET’s designed the machinery and software!!

  11. Heavy Equipment – Development of CNC Lathes and Milling Machines, and develop coding to produce complex parts MET’s develop Computer-Integrated- Manufacturing techniques

  12. Large CNC machine development and Flexible-Automated Manufacturing systems

  13. Robotics and Automation A systems approach where sensors, PLC’S Robot, vision systems and other components all work together

  14. Electrical – Automation, Testing, Design, and …

  15. The IT area - Safety Emphasis OSHA EPA National Transportation Safety Board Ergonomic Standards

  16. The IT - CAD area Solid modeling and design Analysis

  17. The IT - Plastics area Product Mold Machine set-up

  18. Graduation Benefits – • Salaries (starting): • Electrical Engineering Tech – $50-60K • Manufacturing Engineering Tech - $45-55K • Industrial Tech - $35-50K (55K) • Where do our grads work after NIU: • Motorola • Ingersol Milling and Cutting Tool • AON Insurance • GM, Ford, and Chrysler – and Subsidiaries • Underwriters Labs • Wrigley (the chewing gum people) • Seimens Electronics

  19. Did you know that we have a web site with all of this info?It even has brochures!!!www.ceet.niu.edu/tech
