  2. Why is Mapping Important To Us? • County Assessor’s responsibility • Maps should reflect all changes • Maps used to identify, describe and assess real estate parcels for taxation

  3. What Have We Evolved From? • County tax maps created by WV State Tax Department in 1960’s • Original maps produced as ink on mylar • In-office working copies were blue line reproductions • Parcel changes performed by STD

  4. Mapping Begins to Change • GIS • A new tool for more detailed information • City style addressing • Concern of safety and emergency agencies • These concepts need to merge to benefit the community

  5. The Past Year • Auto Desk Map 6 • WV State Tax Mapping Department digitize and label rural districts • Corporations digitized and labeled in county

  6. Catching Up • Two years of past splits plus current transfers • Instruction from county surveyor • Graduate student from GIS Tech Center • Insert and inset maps stitched in by STD

  7. The Need for a More Versatile Program • More flexibility necessary to produce tax maps in office • Arc View 8 • Training and conversion in process

  8. The Coming Year • Accumulated splits and changes • Additional layer information • Major goal • Produce digital tax maps in finished format

  9. Future Vision • Linking GIS with new IAS • New high resolution photography • Center line shape files • Additional layers

  10. Beginning Again? • Combining mapping and addressing with IAS • Cooperation between assessor’s office and OEM • Accurate, up-to-date information
