  2. Low-Noise AC/DC Converter Module on Sale | Favotek Power supplies and converter modules fall into one of three protection classes based on the need, or not, for a protective earth connection. Converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) is one of the most common power electronics applications since electricity is transmitted as AC, yet electronics generally run on DC. Just think about charging your Smartphone – at that moment, you are using an AC/DC converter module. AC/DC converter modules are available in either switching or linear designs. Linear AC/DC converter modules are inexpensive and easy to use but are far less efficient than a switching design with efficiencies above 95% or greater. However, switching to AC/DC converter modules can generate high frequency signals that can cause interference to other electronic components, which must be taken into consideration.

  3. Things to Know When Selecting AC/DC Converter Modules When selecting an AC/DC converter module, designers should consider the input and output voltage and current ranges, efficiency, load voltage regulation and output ripple and noise. The most popular AC/DC converter modules are all switching AC-DC converters. They have a variety of DC voltage outputs from 5V up to 48V, wide input voltage range and high efficiency of 70 up to 91%. The ripple in the output for the selected converters is typically 100 to 200mVp-p, they are rated for operation on 47Hz up to 440 Hz. Related to the load regulation, these AC/DC converter modules run from 0.5% for the best series-regulated supplies to 6%. .

  4. AC/DC Converter Module Applications for Voltage Exceeding 60V Most commercially available power supplies have output voltages ranging from 3V3 to 54VDC. However, there are many end applications for power supplies where a higher voltage is required. Given the lack of availability of standard higher output AC/DC converter modules, it is not unusual for the required system voltage to be generated from multiple standards units in series or by connecting the outputs of a multiple output supply in series. The usual limitation for the maximum output voltage of an AC/DC converter module is the requirement to meet the safe voltage levels required by the Low Voltage Directive and defined by the relevant safety standards. A ubiquitous standard will define a safe voltage level as a maximum of 60VDC, termed as safety extra low voltage (SELV), meaning the maximum output voltage usually available from a power supply range is 54VDC allowing headroom for over-voltage protection circuits to work below the SELV limit. Provided the voltage meets the SELV and energy limits then it can be present on user-accessible parts. It is of course possible to obtain safety approval on AC/DC converter modules with an output greater than 60VDC as evidenced by some of flexible standard platforms. In this case, the safety report details the precautions to be taken in the end application to prevent user access to the non-SELV parts.

  5. In modular AC/DC converter modules, where a chassis has a combination of output modules fitted to create multiple outputs, higher power on a single rail by placing modules in parallel or higher voltage by placing modules in series, some manufacturers may be reluctant to configure modules in series to obtain a voltage above SELV limits because the safety approvals assume all outputs are SELV. In this instance, the equipment designer could connect the outputs in series and cater for the higher voltage in the end equipment approvals. Higher output voltages can also be achieved by connecting the outputs of two or more standard SELV AC/DC converter modules in series. In this case, the safety approvals for the end application must consider the resultant hazardous voltage.

  6. One other consideration for series connection of SELV AC/DC converter modules, whether modular or standalone, is the voltage rating of the common mode filter capacitors connected from output to ground. The output voltage with respect to ground increases for each power supply, the higher up in the series chain it is and eventually, the filter capacitor’s voltage rating may be reached or exceeded resulting in lower overall reliability of the supply. For the same reason, basic isolation between output and ground for the lower voltage of the single output may become only functional or operational isolation for the outputs in serial at the higher voltage. The application designer must be aware of this and take this into account when considering the safety of the end system.
