This infographic illustrates which U.S. states have specific laws regarding registering and filing a franchise on an annual basis. Franchise.Law created this infographic to help visually show which states fall into each category and briefly describe the differences between each category. All states fall into one of three categories, which are registration states, business opportunity and filing states, and no registration required. While each state will have it's own unique franchise laws, these categories identify the registration and filing laws for the state on a broad level. For more detailed information regarding a state's franchise laws, you should consult a franchise lawyer.

State Franchise Laws Many states in the U.S. have additional requirements for registering and filing franchises. Check out the map below for a visual of which states have additional registration and filing laws. Registration States A "registration state" is a state that requires franchisors to register their franchise information on an annual basis. Business Opportunity and Filing States Business opportunity and filing states have laws that regulate the sale of business opportunities. These states may or may not require annual filing, but many require at least an initial filing. No Registration Required Some states do not require registration or filing requirements. These states do still have other franchise laws that franchisors and franchisees must consider. For more detailed information, visit https://franchise.law/state-franchise-laws/
