  5. ENERGY STAR Digital-to-Analog Converter Boxes • What is a Digital-to-Analog Converter Box? • A digital-to-analog (DTA) converter box is a device that converts digital • television broadcast signals to analog signals. • The U.S. is scheduled to shift to digital-only TV broadcasts on February 17, 2009. The switch is being made to provide consumers a clearer picture and more programming options, while simultaneously freeing up analog airwaves for other uses, such as emergency response. • Who will need a DTA Converter Box? • Consumers with analog TVs that receive over-the-air broadcasts using an antenna, will need a DTA in order to continue receiving television broadcasts. • Consumers with analog TVs who subscribe to cable or satellite services should have no interruption in their service and do not need a DTA. • Consumers with digital TVs do not need a DTA. TVs manufactured after • March 1, 2007 are required to be digital TVs.* 5 *Source: Federal CommunicationsCommission

  7. ENERGY STAR Qualified DTA Criteria • ENERGY STAR qualified DTAs use over 50 percent less energy than standard models and meet energy efficiency requirements in both the On and Sleep Modes: • On Mode: Qualified DTAs must use 8 watts of energy or less • Sleep Mode: Qualified DTAs must use 1 watt of energy or less • Qualified DTAs must also be shipped with a default Auto-Power Down setting: • Auto-Power Down DTAs automatically switch from the On Mode to • the Sleep Mode after a period of time without user activity • The default Auto-Power Down setting is 4 hours or less 7

  8. ENERGY STAR qualifies both DTAs and Digital TVs, which consumers can use to receive digital broadcasts. Qualified DTAs and Digital TVs use less energy than standard models. By choosing ENERGY STAR, consumers can save money on their electricity bills and help protect the environment—all without sacrificing quality or performance. Why Buy ENERGY STAR?

  9. In the U.S. alone, EPA estimates that conventional DTAs could consume more than 3 billion kilowatt hours of energy per year and cost Americans $270 million annually in additional electricity bills.* Choosing an ENERGY STAR qualified DTA helps reduce those additional electricity costs. * Dependingon viewer behavior and product design ENERGY STAR qualified products use less energy and cost less to operate resulting in: Saving Energy = Saving Money

  10. Saving Energy Helps Protect the Environment • If all DTAs sold in the U.S met the ENERGY STAR specification, over the lifetime of the products Americans could save $1 billion in energy costs and would prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 1 million cars.
