    1. Free-Writing #2 The Good Wife

    2. 10 minutes with Mildred Read and think Mildred stood over his bed, curiously. He felt her there, he saw her without opening his eyes, her hair burnt by chemicals to a brittle straw, her eyes with a kind of cataract unseen but suspect far behind the pupils, the reddened pouting lips, the body as thin as a praying mantis from dieting, and her flesh like white bacon. (page 48)

    3. Think, talk, and listen What impression does this description give us of Mildred? How are we supposed to react to her? Select her hair, her eyes, her lips, her body, or her flesh, and from the above description, discuss its deeper, more symbolic meaning.

    4. Write In what ways does Mildred fit the standards of a good wife in the 1950s? In what ways does she fail to be a good wife? What causes her to fail? What seems to be Bradburys attitude toward the stereotype of the 1950s housewife? Does he use Mildred to criticize the good wife stereotype, or does he criticize Mildred for failing to achieve the good wife ideal? Explain.
