  1. Digital Archives System DASSwiss Radio DRSPresentation EBU Dublin Dokumentation+Archive 19 April 2007

  2. Content Dokumentation+Archive • Summary • Potential of the Digital Archive System DAS • Digitisation • Network integration • Problems of the project DAS • Added value • Profitability • Feedback to DAS • Archive systems at SRG SSR idée suisse (Swiss Broadcasting Corporation)

  3. 1. Digital Archive System (DAS): Summary (1) Dokumentation+Archive • relational data base for State of the Art archival requirements • perfectly integrated into a modern digital radio environment • this includes the direct linkage with the broadcasting and the music programming systems • linkage to mass storage • direct linking with digitisation stations for magnetic tapes and CDs

  4. 1. Digital Archive System (DAS): Summary (2) Dokumentation+Archive • Based on the product 'Media Archives' of Blue Order • The existing BASIS+ archive database had to be replaced by a differentiated data model and the entire stored data had to be migrated. • The integration of different types of audio elements were a high challenge: DAS is now suitable for the characterisation and retrieval of classical music, light and popular music or sounds, as well as for speech - all on the same surface.

  5. 1. Digital Archive System (DAS): Summary (3) Dokumentation+Archive • Simple editorial search as well as extensive search (documentaries and features) • Pre-listening and direct export to any other digital system • The entire broadcast production is stored in a separate part and can be researched in broadcast protocols in broadcast quality • In addition to audio elements in different formats, the digital archive system also stores accompanying materials and photos •  Operational since summer 2006

  6. 2. Potential of DAS (1) Dokumentation+Archive Search: • Simple or extensive search in metadata of archived programmes (thesauri, master data: support the consistency) • in all 5 programmes via broadcast plans • search over all stored data and types of content (music, speech, sounds) Pre-listening • All digitised stored data can be listened to.

  7. 2. Potential of DAS (3) Dokumentation+Archive Transfer from the broadcast system into DAS: • Audio elements are selected by programme representatives in collaboration with D+A (documentation + archives) and imported directly from DigaSystem into DAS (metadata inclusive).

  8. 3. Digitisation of the archive in cooperation Dokumentation+Archive • 200'000 speech outputs and live music recordings in the archives of SR DRS (Swiss Radio DRS: German-speaking Swiss Radio) 25 % are digitised selection by programme representatives • Support by "Memoriav" / national co-financing/ Lotteriefonds • A total of 3,5 employees of Swiss Radio DRS and Memoriav for digitisation • Audible for the public in libraries/archives via Memobase

Network integration SRDRS-network SR DRS Netzwerk x345-Web x345-DM Fibrechannel-Netzwerk FASTt600: 42 x 146 GB -MediaArchive (essence data) -database Dokumentation+Archive x360-DB 1 Gbit house net 146.159.175.1xx 255.255.255.128 x345-EM IBM 2145 SAN Volume Controller Cluster x345-ExpImp IBM 3584 LTO2 with 3 drives x345-Browse Cisco MDS 9216 SAN Switches x345-SAN SAN-commu-nication 11.1.1.x 255.0.0.0 SDS systems

  10. 5. Problems of the project DAS Dokumentation+Archive • No ready-made system available on the market  high adaptation input / development work of the supplier was necessary • Interface to the broadcast system: complex, responsibilities unclear • Migration of large data volumes: time-consuming, conceptually demanding, risk of data loss, knowledge of stored date necessary • Archives databases: are complex und challenging....because they have to manage huge data volumes in a sophisticated way (thesauri, master data, ...) • Demand of basic and complex search  conceptual work • Many corrections necessary because of high complexity • Response time: powerful hardware necessary

  11. 6. Added value Dokumentation+Archive • Archived programmes for broadcasting: search, pre-listening, export (meta data inclusive)  lead time for broadcasts declines low price archive audios instead of expensive new productions reduction of costs in the traditional archives  value maintenance and enhancement of in-house productions (containing more than 200 man years documentary work, approx. € 13 millions of personnel expenditures) • Online offers: broadcasts of the archives are directly integrable (single broadcasts, catalogues, files) • New music releases: directly as digital files into the archives system (soon also digitally supplied) • Long term storage for editorial systems (e.g. also for data of music programming): backbone for reliable metadata und stable audios

  12. 7. Profitability (1) Dokumentation+Archive • One-off project costs 2003-2007: € 2.5 millions • Reduction of costs in the programmes: € 180'500 / year • Reduction of costs in the archives division: € 170'600 / year

  13. 7. Profitability (2):storage and access Dokumentation+Archive

  14. Dokumentation+Archive

  15. 8. Feedback to DAS: Dokumentation+Archive • 5 clicks, immediate pre-listening, export and the archived audio elements ready for broadcasting within minutes! Furthermore: make additional use of a programme, re-listen to a programme section – the DAS broadcast protocols make it possible - quick and uncomplicated. Jürg Oehninger, editor DRS 1 • "A very good working instrument with lots of data, simple and transparent – in the sense: "he who searches will indeed find."Simone Simona Meier, editor DRS 1 • "Digital radio archives are an open gate to the collective memory. It frees the radio from the chains that it has carried from the beginning: the bondage of time."Thomas Weibel, press officer of Schweizer Radio DRS 2 • "DAS is a very convenient working instrument, even more convenient than the former archives database. The only thing I miss is the access to the entire music stock of SRG SSR (Swiss Broadcasting Corporation) – as we used to have in PHONO...". Geri Stocker, music editor DRS 3

  16. 9. Other archive systems in the broadcast enterprises of SRG SSR (Swiss Broadcasting Corporation) Dokumentation+Archive • RSR (French-speaking Swiss Radio): System Siraneau of the supplier 'Questions d'images' and Cap Gemini as general contractor, 25% of the archives are digitised (in addition to digitisation when utilised), features of the web factory and Digital Rights Management (linked to the broadcast system) inclusive, partially extern access of libraries etc. via 'Bergerac', • RTSI (Italian-speaking Swiss Radio and Television): Radio and TV productions in one archive system, LTO2-robot system, taken over from RAI, 60% of the old archives digitised, all in-house productions preserved, but only partially accessible. • RTR (Romansch-speaking Swiss Radio and Television): rudimental archiving via DigaSystem
