    SILS computing Laptops : SILS Computing Requirements Networking Computer labs : always a good help. Personal accounts UNC---- onyen (email, file storage, registration, grades, etc.) SILS: --- Ruby (server at Sils, login w/ onyen and xx + last four digits of student id + !), same login format as the ones for the Sils lab computers, example, xx4712!

    Software Installation Internet Browsers: Netscape, Explorer, Opera, Mozilla Internet Explorer 6 (use 'Windows Update' from 'Tools' menu) Netscape Navigator 7.2 Mozilla Firefox SSH Secure Shell 3.2.9 Windows Client (ssh client + ftp client) Norton Antivirus 9.0 Microsoft Excel and Access XP/2003/2000 Microsoft Visio (from SILS Computer Lab) Centralized Application Server OASIS (Office of Arts & Sciences Information Services) Citrix Application Server runs the software remotely: virtual workspace requires web plug-in install and login (username & passwd) we will use Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX, Excel and Access XP/2003

    Slide 9:File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

    Used to transfer files efficiently and effortlessly from and to a remote server over the Internet. The user must have an account on the server unless the site is an anonymous FTP site Demonstration using a ftp client using a web browser

    Slide 10:Telnet

    Telnet is a program that allows you log in to a computer over a network like the Internet. Telnet is text-based, like DOS. Now replaced by SSH Telnet exercise Run, telnet isis.unc.edu

    SSH (Secure Shell) is a protocol for remotely logging into a machine via a shell. similar to telnet, but is encrypted More information at www.ssh.com SSH demonstration
