SIDHARTH GAUTAM BECOMES THE BUDDHA • Sidharth Gautam is born a prince in Kapilvastu, 2,500 years ago. • Moved by misery all around sets out to find a way to ward off misery. • Gets enlightment sitting under a Banyan tree in Bodh Gaya. • Gives his first sermon at Sarnath to his first five disciples. • Preaches all his life ways to find peace and happiness. • Passes away at Lumbini at the age of 80.

  3. PHILOSOPHY: FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS What Sidhartha Gautam preached was simple: • There is suffering in the world. • There is reason for that suffering. • There is way to get rid of the suffering. • Only way to get rid of the suffering is to follow ‘ashtmarg’ an eightfold path.

BUDDHAS’ TEACHING Ashtang Marg: • The eightfold path. • Right view: A view based on rational thinking and after understanding the truth and reality. • Right resolve: willfully adopting a pure life and state of mind. • Right speech: no lying, no rude speech. • right conduct: no killing or injuring, no taking what is not given, no sexual acts. • Right livelihood: beg to feed, only possessing what is essential to sustain life. • Right effort: guard against sensual thoughts. • Right mindfulness: never be absent minded, conscious of what one is doing. • Right samadhi (concentration): practicing four stages of dhyana meditation.
