Healthy People 2010 Heart Disease & Stroke Goal Improve cardiovascular health and quality of life through the prevention, detection, and treatment of risk factors; early identification and treatment of heart attacks and strokes; and prevention of recurrent cardiovascular events. (CDC & NIH, 2000)

  3. Preventing Heart Disease Throughout Life • Stop smoking & limit second-hand exposure • Control your blood pressure • Check your cholesterol • Keep diabetes under control • Get moving & exercise • Eat healthy foods • Maintain a healthy weight • Manage stress • Practice good hygiene habits (Mayo Clinic, n.d.)

Preventing Stroke Throughout Life • Control high blood pressure (hypertension). • Lower your cholesterol and saturated fat intake • Don't smoke & limit second-hand exposure • Control diabetes • Maintain a healthy weight • Exercise regularly • Manage stress • Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all (Mayo Clinic, n.d.)

  5. Pediatric Heart Disease Pediatrics can develop heart diseases. These include: • Arrhythmias • Cardiomyopathies • Kawasaki disease • Rheumatic fever • Familial hypercholesterolemia • Myocarditis (Mayo Clinic, n.d.)

  6. Pediatric Strokes Pediatric strokes are more often caused by: • Birth defects • Infections (meningitis, encephalitis) • Trauma • Blood disorders such as sickle cell disease. (Mayo Clinic, n.d.)

Signs and Symptoms of a Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction) Know when to get help: • Pressure, fullness, squeezing in the center of the chest • Pain or numbness that spreads to the shoulders, neck, or arms • Chest discomfort, lightheadedness • Fainting, sweating, nausea, or shortness of breath. • Unexplained anxiety, weakness or fatigue • Palpitations, cold sweats, paleness Do not ignore warning signs of a heart attack. Call 9-1-1 immediately (Do not ignore, n.d.).

Signs and Symptoms of a Stroke (Cerebral Vascular Accident) Know when to get help: • Transient Ischemic Attacks often precede stroke. • Unilateral numbness, weakness, paralysis • Sudden blurred vision • Sudden confusion, difficulty speaking or comprehending simple statements • Loss of balance, coordination, dizziness • Severe, unexplained, localized headache with rapid onset. Call 9-1-1 immediately if you experience symptoms! (American Heart Association n.d.)

Know Your Family Medical History • Individuals with a family history of heart disease and stroke, should be referred to medical care systems to determine the most appropriate screening and preventive measures. • Talk to your healthcare provider about your family health history to make a personalized plan to maintain your health.
