  1. The Fight to Allow Same-Sex Marriage Jackalyn Rainosek

  2. Jackalyn Rainosek and Liz Cloud made their union official on November 6, 2015 after sharing a life together for more than two decades. The Houston couple was finally able to legally marry in the state of Texas following the June 26, 2015 Supreme Court decision allowing same- sex marriages in all states. In 2003, Massachusetts became the first state to legalize gay marriage after a ruling of 4-3 by the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts. San Francisco followed suit by challenging the California law prohibiting marriage of same-sex couples and began issuing marriage licenses to gay couples.

  3. Marriage licenses for same-sex couples were also issued in counties in New Mexico, New York and Oregon but lawsuits to block the marriages ensued. On April 20, 2005, Connecticut became the second state to approve same-sex civil unions and the first state to do so without force from the courts. California became the next state to approve legislation allowing same-sex couples to marry, however, the bill was quickly vetoed by then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Battles continued to loom in states across the country for the legalization of same-sex marriage with bans in multiple states. On May 9, 2012, President Barack Obama endorsed same-sex marriage, becoming the first president in history to fully support civil rights for gays.

  4. One by one, states begin legalizing gay marriage and on November 20, 2014, South Carolina becomes the 35th state to do so. On June 26, 2015, same- sex couples throughout the country finally achieved victory as the Supreme Court declared gay marriage legal in all 50 states. Jackalyn Rainosek and Liz Cloud exercised their right to a legal marriage on November 6, 2015 in Houston, Texas. The date marked their 21st anniversary.
