Race Alone and Race in Combination • Race alone Respondents who reported only one race • Race in combination Respondents who reported two or more races • Race alone or in combination Respondents who reported one race, plus those who reported that race in combination with at least one other race

  7. Diversity The Census Bureau does not have an official definition for “minority” One way to measure the Nation’s diversity is to combine both Hispanic Origin and Race • White Not Hispanic • All other race and Hispanic or Latino groups

  8. Growing Diversity White Not Hispanic Population • Still the largest population group, but it’s growing slowly • 1990: 188.1 million or 76% of the total population • Up 6.4 million -- an increase of 3% since 1990 • 2000: 194.6 million or 69% of the total population

All other race and Hispanic or Latino Groups • Still less than one-third of the population, but growing rapidly • 1990: 60.6 million or 24% of the total population • Up 26.3 million -- an increase of 43% since 1990 • 2000: 86.9 million or 31% of the total population
