Depression--an emotional state characterized by intense and unrealistic sadness that may assume a variety of forms, some more severe and chronic than others. • Three-quarters of all college students experience symptoms. • Are women are more depressed than men? Or are they just more likely to admit to depression and to seek help?

  2. Mood Disorders cont’d What Is Depression? Seasonal Affective Disorder is a special type of depression. It is depression at certain times of year, especially the winter months, and may be due to a lack of natural light. Causes of Depression: • Genetics • Biochemistry • Social/cultural processes • Negative thinking/pessimistic cognitive styles

FACTS: • Suicide is more common than homicide. • 30,000 people commit suicide in the U.S. every year, but this estimate could be three times higher! • Adolescents and the aged are most likely to commit suicide. • Men are more likely than women… • Whites more likely than African Americans… WHY COMMIT SUICIDE? • People often feel overwhelmed by problems or by depression. • Abnormally low levels of serotonin (a neurotransmitter) might also contribute.

  4. Mood Disorders cont’d Suicide: Who and Why? • Suicide is a tragic and potentially preventable public health problem. • Suicidal behavior is complex. Risk varies with age, gender, and ethnic group.

  5. Mood Disorders cont’d What Is Bipolar Disorder? Bipolar disorder manifests as alternations of elated and depressive moods. Bipolar disorder is comprised of episodes of: • Mania--the individual exhibits such symptoms as an expansive mood, increased social activity, talkativeness, sleeplessness, and reckless behavior, AND • Depression--defined earlier as an emotional state characterized by intense and unrealistic sadness that may assume a variety of forms, some more severe and chronic than others.

  6. Other Common Disorders Do You Have an Eating Disorder? Anorexia nervosa is characterized by a severe loss of appetite and weight. Bulimia nervosa is typified by excessive overeating or uncontrolled binge eating followed by self-induced vomiting. • …more common among girls in the middle and upper socioeconomic groups. • One in four college-aged women engage in bulimic behavior. Binge eating – eating an excessive amount of food within a discrete period of time and a sense of lack of control over eating during the episode.

Personality disorders occur when traits become inflexible and maladaptive such that they cause impairment in a person’s social and occupation life. Examples include: The narcissistic personality characterized by an undue sense of self-importance, often accompanied by a sense of inferiority. The antisocial personality in which the person has long-standing habits of maladaptive thought and behavior that violate the rights of others. Borderline personality disorder –individuals who show impulsive behavior and unstable social relationships as well as unstable self image.

  8. Other Common Disorders cont’d Schizophrenia – The Enigmatic Disorder • …one of the most baffling disorders for mental health professionals. • Schizophrenia is NOT split personality. Schizophrenia--a group of related psychotic disorders characterized by severe disorganization of thoughts, perceptions, and emotions; bizarre behavior, and social withdrawal. • SYMPTOMS: Hallucinations, disordered speech, distorted, unrealistic beliefs (delusions), and blunted or inappropriate emotions are common symptoms.

Other Common Disorders cont’d Schizophrenia – The Enigmatic Disorder • The diathesis-stress hypothesis has been used to explain the development of schizophrenia. • This hypothesis views schizophrenia as the interaction between a genetic vulnerability and environmental stressors. • There are differing opinions regarding the outlook for persons with schizophrenia. • Factors predictive of recovery include: • Good adjustment before onset • Family support • Patient insight and cooperation • Sudden onset • Age of onset (the later the better) • Delusional content • Type of schizophrenia • Presence of a triggering event
