  2. Introduction • 2 types of snake attacks • All snake bites require medical treatment. • Highest potential in agricultural and tropical regions of the Southwestern United States. • Chance of snake bite survival is 99.8 percent

  3. Statistics; Last 10 years • 0 Fatalities • 3 reported incidents. • 1 in construction industry.

  4. Accident in Walnut Creek, CA • June 15, 1998 • 2 story residential project • Rattlesnake bite while clearing debris. • Hospitalized for 2 days.

  5. OSHA regulations • General Duty Clause Each employer shall furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which is free from recognized hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees.

  6. OSHA Regulations: Safety Training and Regulation • 1926.21(b)(4) “In job site areas where harmful plants or animals are present, employees who may be exposed shall be instructed regarding the potential hazards, and how to avoid injury, and the first aid procedures to be used in the event of injury.”

  7. Proper Procedures • Watch where you put your hands • If you see a snake, step back • Wear Boots 10” in length • Leather Gloves • Don’t hang out in wood piles, thick vegetation

  8. Proper Procedures • Discuss hazardous wildlife with proper authorities • Inspect areas for nests • Assume all snakes are poisonous • Do not attempt to take custody of animals

  9. In the event of an Incident • Have victim note color and shape of snake • Keep victims calm • Lay victim down and elevate bite region. • Seek Medical attention • Do not cut wound to suck venom
