Our Interviews with Grandparents and Friendsby Phillip M__________ Our interviews were very successful with our grandparents and elderly friends. It showed us how a disability or just getting older effected a person’s life. This interview was also to get to know an elderly person of some sort. These elderly people told us a whole lot about life when they were younger. They also lectured us with a lot of do’s and don'ts because there were alot of things they were not suppose to do that made them end up the way they are now.
About My Friend Mr. Mr. H____By Phillip M____________ • Mr.. Mr. H____ and I had lots of things to say and ask each other. He is the first and only elderly person I know that plays PlayStation. Mr. H____ is a very active man who likes the outdoors and tall buildings. Mr. H____ thinks that school is the most important part of a person’s life. He is very active when it comes to landscaping. I found we have something in common, we both like kids. When I finished the interview with him he made a statement that I will always remember, “People like nice people and people watch what nice people do.”
Preserving our Pearls of Wisdomby: Gisset C_______ • During the interview with my grandmother, Lala, I found her to be a vibrant 79 year old lady. I learned that although she has had a lot of kids, she is not a cranky old lady. In my grandmother’s case she is totally opposite. She likes to go to New Jersey all the time, go shopping at malls, watch her “novelas” all day long, and baby-sit her great-grandchildren.
PRESERVING MY PEARL OF WISDOMby VERONICA N_____ • Interviewing my grandmother, Rosa N____ made me proud. She told me she had “sugar” which is Diabetes. She said she can no longer eat a lot of candy. My grandmother had a lot of trouble answering my questions during the interview, but it was still very interesting to talk and share with her.
Mercie I____ by Jovenel D_____ • My interview with Mercie I____ was interesting. Her story was sad. I learned about her life when she was living in Haiti. Haiti is very different from America. She died a month after the interview.
Meet Mary J___by Felicia T____ • My interview with Mary J___ was very nice. She had a very sad story to tell me about her life. She was born in the Costa Rica. She said she did not like Costa Rica. When she was younger, her mom and dad moved without her to Mississippi. They moved without her because she had a baby at the age of 12 years old. She looked for her family for 56 years but she could not find them. Her baby died at the age of one. She went out to get milk from the cows in the yard. When she got back to the house her baby was not there. She went five yards from her yard and found her baby on the ground. She could not say the person that was responsible for her baby’s death. She didn’t even tell me the sex of her child.
Our Researchby Felicia T___ and Shelene R___ • After working on our interviews with the elderly we went to the library to do research. The Website we went to was Retirement and Elderly Care - Nolo’s Legal Encyclopedia. We found great information on senior citizens and how they could apply for Medicaid, social security, and nursing homes. We found the top methods for retirement plans like IRAs, 401(k)s and others. We also used the SIRs Researcher Database for data/statistics on the elderly.
They still struggle to surviveby Ira J_____ • Elderly people of today struggle to survive like people did back in the old days. If it isn’t family, it is for financial reasons. My theory is this has been happening since the first day of time when the first young person became old. This will continue. It is our responsibility to make life easier for them.
Causes of DeathBy: Janet B___ and Anna M___ • Heart disease is the most frequent cause of death for older Americans. 38% of older Americans die from heart disease. Almost 600,000 died from heart disease.in 1992 Malignant neoplasms, a form of cancer, is second to heart disease. 23 % of older Americans died in 1992. • Our advice is to watch your diet. Decrease the amount of salt and red meat and eat lots of fruit and vegetables. When you cook, don’t use cube seasoning, use powder seasoning. Don’t smoke. Do a lot of exercise to activate your health.
“The Ultimate Source of Struggle”LOVE’S HUMILITYby Jackie J___ and Anna A___ • 72 year old Edna M____ has lived in her Kensington house all her life. Raised there, one of nine kids, three to a bed, she now props a chair under the front doorknob to feel safer. For a total of 14 months Edna struggles ,financially, economically, and emotionally from medical mistakes. In her story we learn how many older women in the United States face the end of their lives fundamentally different from men, and how the improvement of their lives, (especially hers) would require “changes in the medicine practice.” Her Message: May the kindness of God’s will be forever bestowed upon the two of you, for his love and redemption is eternal. Yes, you have faltered, yes, you are weak, but your cries one day shall be heard, and the door of deliverance shall be opened to both you and your husband. This definitely you musn’t give up on.
BACK IN THE CLASSROOMby Jackie J___ • Back in the classroom, students typed their interviews. We then compiled our research and created a series of information Factoids. This was then displayed within a brochure. Students also used T1-83 Graphing Calculator to predict the Age Expectancy of the elderly through a mathematical concept called linear extrapolation or forecasting. This was transferred into a PowerPoint presentation, so that others may get an overview of the project. It is our hope that this project will produce useful information on Social Security, Medicare and other information that can lead to a healthy, happy retirement.
Using the Graphing Calculator(TI-83) for Linear Extrapolation/Forecastingby Jackie J___ and Sagal A____ • 1. Put data in lists L1& L2 • 2. Go to Window and put in appropriate max and min. values • 3. Go to Plot, make sure all plots are off except the first one, and choose the type of graph you want. • 4. Graph data • 5. To find equation of least squares: go to STAT,CALC, then 4:LinREG(ax+b), Press enter • 6. If you want to make predictions you should put your equation in Y. Instead of doing step 5 do this: Linreg(ax+b) L1, L2, THEN GO TO THE VARS key :Y VARS:Function, and press Enter twice. • 7. After doing this, when you graph your data your least squares line should appear. • 8. To make predictions: Press Second key, trace, Value, and Enter in what value of x you want.

Life Expectancy in YearsData AnalysisAnalysis by Steven ____, Edited by Ira _____ The 1900’s must have been a rough period for men and women.They expected that men would only live to be about 46 years old and women to be 48. Within the next 50 years the ages nearly increased by 20 years leaving the males at 65 while ladies were at the high point of 71. After the 1950’s, all the way to 1993 the ages only increased 12 years between both the males & females. It is safe to say that females die at an older age and males die too soon. We look forward to longer lives in the future.
