Feminisation rate Population pyramid Jobs of the wage earners Employment in the saddleries In 1999, a questionnaire has been sent to saddlers and equipment’s shops for horses and rider’s. 747 companies have been asked and 133 questionnaires have been analysed (answering rate: 18%). Wage and non-wage earners have been separated and only the labour force who has a work contract has been considered. Students in training and voluntary workers won’t be considered in the study. Characteristics of the enterprises Quantity of wage earners in the saddleries Nearly the half of the enterprise don’t have any wage earner. The job is done by the manager sometimes assisted by his/her spouse. Indeed, 63% are less than 40. Contrary to that, the non-wage earning manager are older (49% are more than 40). Activities The turnover Synthesis of employment in saddleries in 2001 Work contracts Distribution of the different contracts of the wage earners Nearly 87% of the wage earners have an open-ended contract and 83% have a full time job. We can note that the work contracts in saddleries are in the national average. Indeed, INSEE considers that in 1999 90% of the work contracts are open-ended contracts and 83% are full time job contracts. unknown Open-ended contract 12% Part-time 86,4% job Fixed-term contract 5% Full-time 7,2% job unknown 83% 6,4% 45% of the enterprises are retailers (retail represent more than 75% of the turnover). The others, (38%) don’t have any principal activity if we remove the 11% of manufacturers and the 3% of wholesaler. The “mixed” enterprises have a turnover divided between manufacturing, repairing and retail. Moreover, wholesale and second hand sale can be disregarded. The enterprises who don’t have a principal activity used to have only one person, wage or non-wage earner, depending on the juridical status of the enterprise. The enterprises are fairly distributed around the average of 76 224 euros of turnover. Globally, retail represents the biggest part of the total turnover (55%). Manufacturing represent nearly 25% of the total turnover and repairing only 13%. Wholesale and second hand sale only represent a very small part (1%) of the total turnover. The enterprises with a high turnover have more labour force than the others. Indeed, 75% have wage earners whereas 70% of small enterprises only have a non-wage earning manager. Moreover, the enterprises with a turnover higher than 76 224 euros are employing 73% of the wage earners.
