  1. The Internet A presentation by Miss Chaffee

  2. What is the Internet? We know that one or more computers connected together are called a network. The Internet is tens of thousands of networks connected together to share information. The computers connect to host servers so that anyone may access the information on the web pages. The Internet was started by the United States Department of Defense in 1969 so the workers could share and communicate information around the world. Today more than 100 million people are using the Internet.

What can you do on the Internet? • There is so much to do and explore on the Internet. • You could… • Surf the World Wide Web • Send E-Mail across the world • Read different newsgroups on just about any topic • FTP (File Transfer Protocol) • Shop • Get homework help • Listen to music! • Can you think of any other things you can do on the Internet?

  4. To get on the Internet you need: • A computer • A phone or cable modem to connect to the Internet. Some people and businesses have a DSL or T1 connection. • Internet Browser-software such as Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. The browser lets you view web pages. • Internet Service Provider-such as Adelphia, Mindspring, AOL or Prodigy. AOL and Prodigy also come with a built in browser. The Internet Service Provider is the company you pay to connect you to the Internet using your phone or cable modem, DSL or T1 connection.

Browser Buttons • Stop- Allows you to prevent a page from loading. • Refresh- Will reload the page if there are errors. • Forward- Goes forward to a page you have visited. • Back- Goes a page backwards. • Home- Takes you to the home page of your browser. • Favorites- Where you save your favorite web sites to access later. • History- Allows you to see web sites that were recently visited.

  6. World Wide Web (WWW) • The part of the Internet that has web pages. • Includes text and pictures • Sounds and videos are available • You need a web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape) to view the pages.

  7. Web Site • A single group of many pages dealing with the same topic and written by the same person is called a Web site. • The home page is like a cover of a book or magazine that tells what is inside. The home page is the first page of a web site.

  8. Uniform Resource Locator • A URL is the address assigned to each Web page on the WWW • Your browser uses the URL to find the Web page on a server

  9. Different Domains on the Net .com =commercial .net =network .edu =educational .org =organization .mil =military .gov =government

Electronic Mail (E-Mail) • Allows you to send and receive messages from around the world • Fast and convenient • You can also include attachments like files and pictures with e-mail messages • It’s free! No more telephone bills! Example E-mail Betty@adelphia.net Betty is the person you are writing to @ stands for the word “at” Adelphia is the company, Service Provider, organization or network you are writing to Net means it is a network

  11. Newsgroups • Bulletin-board discussion groups based on various topics • Thousands exist • Anyone can respond!

  12. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) • Way to share files and programs • You can download and upload files off the Internet onto your computer • You need FTP software to get the Files

  13. Hypertext/Hyperlinks • Underlined words on a web page that allow you to jump to another page are called hyperlinks. Most hyperlinks are blue or red. • Hyperlinks are underlined an when you put your cursor on top of the hyperlink it turns into a glove or hand. That means you can click on the word to go to a new web page. • Pictures can also be hyperlinks.

  14. Child Safe Search Engines • We will be using child safe search engines while we explore the Internet. Child-safe search engines filter out the inappropriate information that is available on the Internet. • Yahooligans is a child safe search engine. • Click on the hyperlink to Yahooligans above.

The Rules of Netiquette Here are some safety rules to follow while you are surfing the Internet! • Always use a child-safe search engine to filter out inappropriate information • Never meet anybody off the Internet! • Capital Letters are considered SHOUTING! Use proper grammar and use a spell-checker. • Only talk to your friends from school or your relatives while you are in a chat room or using Instant Messenger. • Never give out your last name, address or age to ANYBODY for ANY REASON • Tell an adult if anyone off the Internet tries to contact you online or off line. • Keep these rules in mind and you will have happy surfing!
