  4. History • Ancient China covers 11,000 years of history. It is divided into big blocks of time.

  5. Early History/ Lungshan people: These people lived in caves, made fires, used stone and bone tools. They wore fur and leather clothes. They were hunters. Bronze Age/ Rich nobles and poor farmers. During this period the Chinese learned how to make bronze out of tin and copper. History (continued)

  7. The Three Doctrines • The Three Doctrines or the three teachings were Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism. • Confucianism was named after Confucius. He studied and learned and was the first teacher in China. He taught responsibility and moral character. Confucianism is not a religion. It’s a way of behaving, so that you will do the right things.

  8. Taoism Tao means the way to happiness. Taoism is not a religion. It is a way of looking at life and a way of thinking about things. If you want to learn about Taoism read The House At Pooh Corner by A.A. Milne. It is based on Chinese thinking.

  9. Buddhism • Buddhism teaches that a person is successful not because he or she is better than someone else. A person is successful because has he or she has given their best within their means. Buddhism believes in love, wisdom, goodness, calm and self-control. Buddha invented Buddhism.

  10. Buddhism (continued) • Buddhism believes that people should: • Know the truth • Resist evil • Not say anything to hurt others • Respect life and property • Work at a job that does not injure others • Free one’s mind from evil • Be in control of one’s feelings and thoughts

  11. Chinese New Year • Chinese New Year is a very old celebration . It is a time for repaying debts and enjoying feasts. In ancient China they gave red envelopes of lucky money to friends and relatives during this celebration.

  12. Chinese New Year (continued) • On Chinese New Year’s Eve parents let children stay up as long as possible because legend says that the longer children stay awake the longer their parents will live. The Chinese believed it was unlucky to sweep your house during the New Year as you might sweep the New Year luck out of your house.

  13. Chinese New Year (continued) • Today in China people wear white in honor of the moon. Lanterns are hung in malls and markets. Children carry paper lanterns to school to light their way to a bright and happy future. This year Chinese New Year starts on January 29th and goes to February 19th. Dragons are the symbols for Chinese festivals.

  15. Chinese Lantern Festival • Chinese Lantern Festival is celebrated 15 days after the Chinese New Year. It is a very old celebration. In ancient times people would go in search of spirits with burning sticks. Later they used lanterns. The lanterns are a symbol to a bright and happy future.

  17. The Great Wall Of China • The construction of the Great Wall began between the 7th and 8th centuries. They built the wall to protect themselves from enemies. It was 5000 thousand kilometers long in Beijing. Later on it extended to 6,700 kilometers west. The wall has passes, watchtowers, single towers, and moats. The Great Wall Of China is one of the seven wonders of the world.

  18. The Chinese zodiac has twelve signs. A long, long time ago Buddha summoned all the animals together to assign each of them a year. The animals are: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. This is the way it works you look for the year you were born and that tells you what animal is yours. According to the Chinese calendar I am a dog. Chinese Calendar

  20. There were two styles of Chinese food. One in the north, the other in the south. Northern dishes are oily. They used vinegar and garlic. They ate dumplings, pasta, steamed stuffed buns, fried meat dumplings, steamed bread and rice. Southern dishes were not as oily and they used more spices such as, ginger, root, garlic, cinnamon, pepper, soy sauce and sugar. They also used black Chinese mushrooms. Tea and wine were the most common drinks. Food

  21. Clothing • People in ancient China wore tunics. Women wore long tunics down to the ground with belts. Men wore shorter ones down to their knees. Sometimes they wore jackets over their tunics. In winter they sometimes wore pants under their tunics. • Poor people made their clothes out of hemp. Rich people wore clothes out of silk. • Most men and women wore their hair long.

  22. Clothing (continued) • In China women had to bind their feet. They thought to be beautiful they needed tiny feet only three inches long. At five or six years old the parents bandaged the feet of their daughters. Sometimes they broke the toes. The girls spent most of their time crying for two or three years and then the feet stopped hurting a little.

  24. There were two kinds of houses in ancient China those for poor people and those for rich people. The poor houses were made out of earth. The roof was made of thatch. It was one room. The rich houses were bigger. They had high walls made of earth and a courtyard. Houses

  25. Inventions • The ancient Chinese invented paper, gunpowder, matches, the compass, a seismograph to measure earthquakes and the umbrella. They created gorgeous art. Even their money was neat. Coins had a hole in their center. There were not any banks, so people stored and kept their coins by running a string through the center.

  26. China Today • Ancient China was very different from China today. The population of China today is 1 306 313 812. Beijing is a large and modern city. Some people still believe in Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism but there are also Christians. Most people still speak Chinese. Chinese New Year is still celebrated.

  28. What I Learned • I learned about Buddhism . I really like all the things that Buddhism means. I learned my Chinese zodiac animal. I learned that the girls there thought that to be beautiful they had to have small feet which is not true. If I ever wanted to go someplace it would now be China because I know a lot about it.

  29. The End • Thank you for coming. I hope you had a good time. Good bye. ~!* Karley *!~
