  11. Participating in the Community Follow similar accounts • Instagram is a community, and you will gaining followers if you participate in that community. • Don’t just simply uploading photos but communicate to other people. • Find people that are posting pictures that interest you, and follow their accounts. • Don't just simply follow everyone you see to avoid your feed become overloaded. • Just follow those accounts that you find most interesting.

  12. Participating in the Community Like and comment on pictures • Once you start following some people, take some time to Like and comment on their photos. • Not only will this make the other person feel good, but other people may see your name or comment and check out your profile. • If you stay active, this can lead to a steady stream of new followers.

  13. Participating in the Community Respond to comments on your own photos • Interacting with your own followers is essential to maintaining your follower base. • Respond to any interesting comments, and thank your followers for any compliments. • If a follower asks an intriguing question, take the time to answer it properly.

  14. Participating in the Community Connect your Facebook account • Instagram is now owned by Facebook, and you are losing out on a lot of potential followers if you don't connect your accounts. • All of your Instagram posts will be pushed to Facebook as well, giving you double exposure. • You can connect your accounts through the Instagram Settings menu.

  15. Participating in the Community Fill out your bio • Your Instagram bio is an often-overlooked but very important part of your Instagram account. • Let people know who you are and why they should follow you. Include a couple hashtags as well that relate to your content. • Your bio is another good place to place a call-to-action.

  16. Using hashtags (#) • You can add hashtags in the caption or comments of your post. • If you add hashtags to a post that is set to public, the post will be visible on the corresponding hashtag page.

  17. How do I use hashtags? To tag a photo or video with a hashtag: • Take or upload a photo or video • Choose to add a filter, then type # followed by text or emoji in the Caption field (ex: #flower) • If you want to add a hashtag to a post you've already uploaded, edit the caption or include your hashtag in a comment on your photo

  18. Things to keep in mind: • When people with private profiles tag posts, they won't appear publicly on hashtag pages. • Numbers are allowed in hashtags. • Spaces and special characters, like $ or %, are not allowed. • You can only tag your own posts but not other people's photos/videos. • You can use up to 30 tags on a post. If you include more than 30 tags on a single photo/video, your comment won't post.

  19. Things to keep in mind: Be Specific • Choosing specific tags will help you connect with other like-minded people on Instagram. Be Relevant • Make it easy for other like-minded Instagrammers to find you by making sure your tags describe your photo. Using very general tags like #photo might get you a few likes, but with over 700,000 photos tagged #photo, it isn’t the best way to make your photos stand out and connect with the people most like you. Relevant tags will help you attract new followers who will take a genuine interest in your photos and continue liking and commenting on your photos over time
