  1. Domestic Violence • Divorce is a very difficult part of life. A couple that once cared for each other has lost interest, have changed or worse: has become toxic and abusive. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women. Injuries from domestic violence outweigh car accidents, muggings and rapes combined. This statistic is both alarming and terrifying but only the tip of the iceberg. In the United States, for three women are murdered by a husband or boyfriend per day. Though most women are too scared to report these incidents, it is always important to remember that the law is on your side and there is always a way out of these relationships. • Are you currently in an abusive relationship and seeking a divorce? Contact a lawyer today. • People in abusive relationships often avoid calling the police when things get serious. A victim should note their scars, bruises and other injuries and if possible, report these crimes. An abusive relationship could have devastating effects on a family such as: • Severe injuries • Physically and verbally abused children • Sexual abuse • Severe injury • Death • Emotional distress in children • Violent actions in children • The biggest concern in these cases is usually the children. More often than not, an abused woman is a stay at home mother because the husband won’t let them have a job. The lack of resources, ability to support their child on their own and general fear can keep them from seeking the help and safety they need. It is important to know that there are often many local programs such as shelters and facilities that can keep a victim and their child safe. It is important to act quickly in these situations. The odds of an abusive parent getting custody of a child after a divorce are very slim. Don’t let fear keep you from getting the help and safety you need and deserve. • If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship and is looking to divorce or separate, seek help immediately. Once you are safe, contact a lawyer who can help.
