  1. The Importance Of The Vet In Your Pet’s Life From a young age – in fact from the moment they come to your house – your pet should be taken for regular visits to the vet you entrust their medical needs with. The good vet will keep proper records and a data base that has all the pertinent details to ensure your pet’s health is always monitored. It becomes a lifelong association. Taking your pet to the vet is the same as humans visiting their doctor. It starts at a young age so the vet gets to know your pet, establishes what possible future issues with their health may be, also to ensure it is fit and healthy for its breed and age. Of course this is the regular 6-monthly or annual visit that needs to be done, just like humans do. Also, during these visits dental health is checked, to make sure there are no underlying problems that may cause future health issues. Good vets today have access to the best machines and equipment such as good x- ray equipment, for example, to be able to look at fractures, skeletal problems and related issues. Also, they have well-fitted surgeries to do operations on your animals and they will make sure follow-up procedures are scheduled and owners informed of what proper care after surgery entails. The vet is the person in charge of your pet’s health just as you are in charge of their general care. Not all pets need the same care at the same time; the owner should know when a regular visit should be scheduled and they should trust their vet’s instincts with regard to services such as checking not only for the obvious, but also for conditions related to, say, arthritis, and other possible skeletal problems. The vet will also establish quickly whether or not your cat or dog may be suffering from muscular pain and discomfort. Talk to your vet, too, about neutering and spaying and schedule the best time for this.

  2. A good, experienced vet has done these check-ups many times, with different breeds and sizes, and he/she understands what the best treatment or advice would be. Some vets truly go out of their way to assist the pet owners they deal with and will, in addition to their day-to-day services, offer services such as boarding for absent owners, or advice and assistance with breeding, or where to find good breeders and puppies or kittens. They are the kind of vets that go out of their way to ensure that pet owners are given good assistance and support in terms of which they can build a great relationship with their pets. Good vets are also available for any emergency situations. You want to know that the vet that you always visit will be available at those times that an emergency presents itself. Things go awry so quickly: the dog or cat has something stuck in their throat, a snake bites them, an accident causes fractured legs or other injuries. Just like with our children, emergencies need to be seen to immediately. The best vets make this service available and may actually meet you at their rooms or clinic once they know you well and you have explained the problem to them, especially out of normal working hours. Of course emergencies happen during the day too, during office hours. Then you arrange to meet the vet as soon as you can. What you want to feel confident about is that your vet, or someone from his/her practice, is always available to assist as soon as you and your pet need them. Therefore, deal with the vets you trust, someone you can rely on, a vet that looks at what he does as a passion, not merely a job.
