  1. Your Dog And Ear Cropping Dog owners make sure they feed and look after their animals, and they make sure they have access to medical treatment too. This means you get to know the veterinarian that you see when you take your dog in when it is sick, but often for other reasons. One such reason refers to ear crop services, whether you live in Brighton, Colorado or in other parts where this is done. REASONS Ear cropping services are offered to owners that approach the vet with such request. Some of the reasons they want to have this done refer to a medical need, while at times ear cropping is done for other unrelated, but important reasons. When a dog suffers from, for example, otitis, which is the term used for ear infection, one of the solutions may be ear cropping. Often the result of ear flopping, which prevents light and air from reaching the inner ear, is an ear infection. Therefore, should an animal with uncropped ears persist in getting ear infections in later life, the owner may well, when the dog is older, resort to ear cropping, which often helps to put an end to such problems (since the procedure is normally done when the animal is young). And it has to be mentioned, too, that not all breeds are really meant for this procedure. It is more suitable for larger dogs, often those that fulfill a role other than being a companion, such as is the case with a little poodle, yorkie or chihuahua. There is good reason for that too. Serving animals, such as guard dogs and those you keep to protect people and property, and even those that are used during the hunt, often look much tougher, intimidating and alert with cropped ears as opposed to those with floppy ears. The whole idea with ear cropping is to ensure that the animal looks ready to pounce should an intruder or criminal step out of line. WHEN SHOULD EAR CROPPING BE DONE? Ear cropping is normally done when the animal is very young, at between 8 and 12 weeks in order for it to adjust quicker and better than would be the case if it were older. DETERRENT Dogs with cropped ears serve as a great deterrent for criminal activity. Criminals will often think twice before they set foot on a property or premises where dogs with cropped ears are present. Think of, for example, Doberman Pinchers, certain Mastiff breeds, terriers and some Bully breeds – they are often the ideal dogs for ear cropping. So, you may want to prevent otitis from plaguing your dog when it reaches adulthood, or you may want the dog to look fierce and ready to serve – that is why you may want their ears to be cropped. PROCEDURE It is important to note that no owner or unqualified person should ever attempt to perform ear cropping; it is meant to be done by knowledgeable, experienced professionals such as vets and their assistants. They work from clean, disinfected rooms and they have all the correct equipment and tools to ensure the animal suffers the least pain and inconvenience. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and depending on the vets you deal with, ears can be cropped in a number of lengths and shapes, which the owner discusses before the time with the vet. After the ears have been cropped, they are bandaged to ensure they do not get infected, and also to help them stand erect. Follow-up is necessary, and the vet and owner will schedule visits in this regard – until both feel there is no further need for the vet to see the animal. Ear cropping remains popular among many dog owners; they are advised to contact a good vet known for offering this service successfully.
