  2. Status in Indonesia • Limited private sector participation • Lack of regulatory body • Duopoly makes the rules. • Lack of interest and awareness (SMEs) • Lack of telecommunication infrastructure.

ICT Access • Fixed line: • 29 telephones for 1000 inhabitants which is about the average for low-income countries in the region. • Indonesia has the highest percentage of its main lines (4.43 %) dedicated to public access amongst the lower-income countries in the Asia-pacific region. • The Wartels generate a quarter of all telephone traffic in Indonesia and contribute approximately 20% of PT Telkoms revenue from telephones. • Mobile: • Over 25% of the total telephone subscribers are wireless mobile.

ICT Access (Contd) • Internet services: • 75% of the subscribers to ISP are based in Jakarta, 15% in Surabaya and the remaining 10% distributed around the country. • about 62% of internet users use internet kiosks to connect to the internet. • As of June 2000, there are about 125,000 internet subscribers and about 1 million users. • There are about 2 million personal computers in Indonesia (incl. 250,000 in homes).
