Lesson 2, A King Like All The Nations • Why did the elders of Israel want a king? 1 Sam 8:5, 20 • Samuel had grown old (about 75) • Samuel’s sons, Joel and Abijah, did not walk in his ways. • Turned aside for dishonest gain, took bribes, perverted justice • “Appoint a king for us…like all the nations” (8:5) • 1 Sam 8:5, “Nations,” i.e., non-Israelite. The elders were willing to change being ruled by God to being judged by a king like the “nations.” • …“That our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles” (8:20). • 1 Sam 8:20, “Our” battles, not the LORD’s battles! Lesson 2, A King Like All The Nations • Discuss Israel’s great wickedness in asking for a king. • “They have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being King over them,” (8:7; 10:19; cf. 12:12). • Rejected: to treat as loathsome, e.g., in refusing to heed God or to accept His authority • “Like all the deeds since Egypt…forsaken [i.e., apostatize] Me and served other gods…” (8:8) • They were expressing dissatisfaction with the way the LORD had been leading them. • They wanted the splendor of a visible monarch (to order their national affairs not by faith, but by sight). • Application The United Kingdom

Lesson 2, A King Like All The Nations • How could the LORD be displeased with their request for a king, but nevertheless give them a king? 1 Sam 10:19 • Although the LORD recognized the need for a king, He was displeased with the state of their hearts from which came the desire for a king. [Cf. Balaam, Num 22:12, 20, 22, 32.] • The term “rule over”, 9:17; 10:1, is appropriate, i.e., they needed a king. Cf. Judg 21:25, “…there was no king in Israel...” • Application The United Kingdom

[Providence: God’s hand moving in our lives through non-miraculous means.] • For example, “I will send,” 1 Sam 9:16 • Donkeys were lost, but found after Saul meets Samuel • A servant with Saul who suggests, “ask the seer” • The servant had a ¼ shekel of silver • The young women give directions to find Samuel • Application The United Kingdom
