  2. Role as Practitioner(Christianity) • Women can fast and pray for the sick or those who request prayer. • Men are to direct in worship and women are to stay quiet. • Women can be ordained to the role of Deaconess (a woman chosen to assist in the church ministry).

  3. Restrictions No Property Dress and Veiling Dowry No Divorce No Remarriage Encouragement To be fully aware in religious principles. To follow certain vratas (vows) such as fasting. To give time to spiritual practices and to give counsel to younger family members. Role as Practitioner(Hinduism)

  4. Role as Practitioner(Islam) • Fulfill the five pillars • Belief in the Oneness of God and prophet Muhammad • Practice of the daily prayers • Concern for and giving to the needy (zakat) • Self-purification through fasting • The pilgrimage to Makkah • Wearing of the hijab • encouraged but not mandated • The observance of chastity and moral standards

  5. Role as Mother(Christianity) • Mothers in the Christian faith ought to show traits of holiness, faithfulness, and modesty. • Modesty should be promoted by mothers in their children from early infancy. • Teach the children spiritual truths. • Take care of the children’s physical needs.

  6. Role as Mother(Hinduism) • Dedicate time to spiritual practices and to give counsel to younger family members. • School their daughters in the traditions and practices of the religion. • To encourage chastity both amongst sons and daughters. • To prepare for an adequate arrangement of a dowry.

  7. Role as Mother(Islam) • The status and value attached to parents in the Muslim world is very high. • The Muslim mother has accordingly a great feeling of security about the type of care and consideration she can expect from her children when she reaches old age • Take care of her children (cooking, cleaning, and educating her children in the ways of Islam)

  8. Role as Wife(Christianity) • Fornication is clearly condemned • the ideal situation would be to marry as a virgin. • Wives areto be in subjection to their husbands. • Scripture outlines the delegation of authority within the family. All refer to women being in subjection to their husbands • Not see divorce as an option

  9. Role as Wife(Hinduism) • In married life, the wife's roles are centered on the home and she is not burdened with contributing towards the family income. • In household life, to serve a worthy husband and treat his friends and relatives with affection. • As a wife, she performs four roles: 1. as a servant (dasi) in duty, 2. as a minister (mantri) in decision making, 3. as a mother (mata) to and 4. as a lover (rambha) in his bed.

  10. Role as Wife(Islam) • Wives are to be in subjection to their husbands. • The wife is responsible for the welfare of the family. • Responsible for the nurturing, guidance and improvement of the following generations of men and women.

Questions: • Can a women’s role really be identified with reference solely in a religious manner without social/cultural interference? • Does Islam treat women better or worse than other religions do? • Is the notion that women are treated as second class citizens in religion (in theory not practice) true?
