  1. Heliosphere & Cosmic Ray Working Group • Eberhard Möbiuswith Gary Zank, Justin Kasper,Charles Smith, Hans-Reinhard Müller • Motto:We try to understand our Home Systemand stick our head beyond. IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  2. Why Bother? To Understand the Environment forour Space Weatherand our First Shield The OnlyShield forAstronautsto Moon &Mars!PotentiallyDangerousEnvironment IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  3. Sun and Heliosphere Responsible for Our Space Weather • Why are we vulnerable? • Space Weather Forecast todaylike Weather Forecastat the Beginning of the 20th Century! • We need to understand the root cause • We need to understand all shields IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  4. Why Bother? • The Sun is a Typical Star(the only one with a close-up view) • LISM is Original “Star Stuff”• Other Stars Have “Astrospheres” IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  5. Astrospheres Interstellar Gas Flow LL Orionis BZ Camelopardis IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  6. If We Could See Our Heliospherefrom Outside … IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  7. Why Bother? Sticking ourHead out of theHeliosphere is Explorationat its Best! No Exploration HasEver Come Back Without NewExciting Discoveries! IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  8. Goals • Carry out the Message (and Connect)!Heliospheric Science contributes to wider community (Astronomy & Solar System exploration) • Heliospheric Science is about Exploration • Cosmic Rays are Messengers of Acceleration, Fundamental Processes, another Matter Sample • The Heliosphere with its Exclusion and Modulation is the First Shield & the Only One for Mars-Astronauts • Understand Our Home System from the Sun to its Boundary with the Interstellar Medium Including the Entering Cosmic Rays IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  9. How to Do It? • We Are in Good Shape for IHY! - Currently We Have a Fleet of Spacecraft Partially Solar Heliospheric: ACE, SOHO, Ulysses, Wind Partially other goals: Voyagers, IMAGE, SAMPEX -> Great Heliospheric ObservatoryTo Be Joined by STEREO & IBEX STEREO: adds Stereo View of Solar Source IBEX: adds 3D View of Heliospheric Boundary - Modelling Effort is Going StrongMHD, Multi-Fluid and Kinetic Models Adding 3D and Time Dependence Newest Kidon the Block IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  10. What Would We See,if We Had Giordi’s Visor? • We’d See a Bright Spot of Atoms Flowing into our Visor, Like a “Spotlight” We Learn aboutLISM Speed,Temperature & Filtering at the Boundary IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  11. What Else Would We See,if We Had Giordi’s Visor? • We’d See a Dim Glow of Atoms Trickling into our Visor We Learn aboutHeating andAcceleration at theTermination Shock IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  12. How to Do It? • We Are in Good Shape for IHY! • - Currently We Have a Fleet of Spacecraft-> Great Heliospheric ObservatoryTo Be Joined by STEREO & IBEXBut: New Threats to MO&DA for e.g. Voyager + Ulysses Can Jeopardize the Observatory!-> Maintain Our Great Observatory!! • - Modelling Effort is Going StrongBut: Combination of MHD + Neutrals in 3D needed No Heliospheric Group in ST Theory Program!-> Maintain & Strengthen Support for Modeling Efforts!! IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  13. Heliosphere & Cosmic Ray GroupCompiled Questions & Campaigns • Provide Consistent View of the 3D Heliosphere 3Do & i 3Do & i 3Do, TS IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  14. Heliosphere & Cosmic Ray GroupCompiled Questions & Campaigns • First Shield against GCRs 3Do & i IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  15. Heliosphere & Cosmic Ray GroupCompiled Questions & Campaigns • Universal Processes 3Di 3Di & CS 3Di&o 3Do&i IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  16. Campaigns • 3D-Heliosphere at the A- Solar Minimum (1 AU - VLISM)(3Do) (E.M., C.S., & …) • 3D-Heliosphere at the A- Solar Minimum (Sun - 2 AU)(3Di) (J.K. & … • Comparative interplanetary shock study(CS) (planetary, comet, interplanetary, Termination, …) • Study of the Heliosphere near the Termination Shock(TS) • Intercalibration of SW observations(SWI) (J.R.) (consolidate distribution functions & make the data available! IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  17. How to get the “I” into IHY? Small Distributed Observatories • 1) Neutron Monitors (make use of all around the world, fill gaps; stability of neutron monitors) (John B.; Cliff L.) • 2) µ-monitors 30 GeV; $100k (John B.) • 3) Low Frequency Radio Observatories (also EPO) (Justin K.) • 4) InterPlanetary Scintillation (IPS) • 1, 2, 3, 4): encourage other countries to invest in order to get into front line research; assistance with blueprints and funds for workshops etc. possible3): PI projects with placing units in other countries IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  18. A Few Concrete Steps • WhitePaper about Synergism and Relevance of Heliosphere-LISM Exploration • Science Closure Matrix towards Campaigns • ISSI is Interested in a Workshop in 2007 on “Heliosphere to the Local Bubble” title TBD • Breakfast Conversation with Alex Young:In addition to “Universal Processes” stress“Universal Techniques”: e.g. Image Processing IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC

  19. What’s the Plan? • Let’s Get the Campaigns Straight!Rudimentary Closure Matrix & Outline Exist • Get the Support to Keep the Observatory Going!Timing of STEREO & IBEX perfect, but Synergism!! • STEREO Launch 2006; IBEX 2008 Ready for2007/08 is the International Heliophysical Year (IHY) 1957/58 was the International Geophysical Year (IGY) Back then, We Stuck Our Head Above the Atmosphere Now, We Will Stick Our Head Out of the Heliosphere IHY Workshop February 2005Eberhard Möbius, UNH SSC
